SUMMARY:The Use of Force and the Future of International Law
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Friday\, March 13. \nThe first few months of 2026 have seen the executive branch of the United States test the limits of its authority to use force against international actors – from the U.S. maritime bombing campaign against suspected drug boats\, to the military incursion into Venezuela\, to significant military action against Iran. Each has raised serious questions about compliance with U.S. domestic law and\, increasingly\, international law as well. \nCCWA is honored to host Tess Bridgeman\, Co-Editor in Chief of Just Security. Her presentation will help us understand the legal framework that governs how and when a President can use military force overseas\, historical precedents\, and the role of Congress. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. To join\, renew\, or upgrade your membership\, please click here.

SUMMARY:The U.S. G20 Presidency: Narrowed Focus Amid Sharp Divisions
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Monday\, January 12. \nCCWA is honored to host Caitlin Welsh\, director for global economic engagement at the National Security Council from 2018-2020\, to share her insights on this year’s U.S. G20 presidency and what it means for the future of multilateralism. The return of the G20 presidency to the United States follows a period of expansion within the G20\, both in terms of membership as well as agenda items. Thus far\, the U.S. seems intent to redirect the G20 away from its recent development-centered agenda and towards an agenda anchored in economic growth and deregulation. Such a shift raises fundamental questions about the G20’s purpose\, legitimacy\, and effectiveness at a moment when multilateralism itself is increasingly under strain.

SUMMARY:Sports Diplomacy in America's Decade of Sport
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. \nFrom the Olympics to the FIFA World Cup\, international sports competitions have long been a way for countries to display national pride and attain international recognition that they might not regularly receive. However\, sports diplomacy — the application of sports to international diplomacy — is a much newer area of development within international relations\, but one that could potentially have a wide global impact. With the United States hosting the World Cup in 2026\, the Olympics in 2028\, and the Winter Olympics in 2034\, the U.S. is entering a decade in which it will be front and center on the stage of international sports. How might sports diplomacy help the U.S. make the most of this unique opportunity? \nTo better understand the impact of sports diplomacy on both a global and local level\, CCWA’s CEO Marti Flacks will lead a conversation with Travis Murphy\, CEO of Jetr Global Sports\, and Mike Mulhall\, Senior VP at the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. They will cover a range of topics\, from the role that sports can play in bilateral relations between two countries\, to the involvement of private corporations and teams\, to how Cleveland can leverage sports diplomacy for its benefit. \nTravis Murphy is a recognized global leader in sports diplomacy\, immigration\, and government affairs. As the founder and CEO of Jetr Global Sports + Entertainment\, he brings more than two decades of experience in international policy and fostering cross-cultural connections. Travis has held pivotal roles as a sports executive\, U.S. diplomat\, a consular officer in West Africa and South America\, as well as chief of staff in Congress. Most recently\, he helped lead international government affairs for the NBA. His expertise was instrumental in securing Brittany Griner’s release from unlawful detention in Russia in 2022. \nMike Mulhall is the Senior Vice President\, Business Development & Revenue for Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In this role\, he provides leadership to the organization’s operations group\, partner alliances and bid process for future events. Prior to his current role\, Mulhall served as Vice President of Partnerships for Destination Cleveland where he helped to manage relationships with nearly 700 organizations which are working to grow the tourism industry in Northeast Ohio. Mr. Mulhall has also served as part of the leadership for the sales team at both the Cleveland Guardians and Six Flags. He lives in Cleveland with his wife\, Deb\, and has four adult children.

SUMMARY:Reluctant Conquest: America's Relationship with the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information will be sent to eligible members on Thursday\, October 30. \nCCWA is honored to host Dr. Kathryn Lavelle\, Ellen and Dixon Long Professor of World Affairs at Case Western Reserve University\, to share her insights on the past\, present\, and future of America’s relationship with the Arctic region. The strategic and economic value of this vast region is on the rise\, as climate change opens up new shipping lanes and increases the potential to exploit the region’s natural resources. Meanwhile\, Russia’s military presence in the Arctic continues to expand – as does as does NATO’s\, thanks to the induction of new members Sweden and Finland. Drawing upon her research for her new book\, Reluctant Conquest: American Wealth\, Power\, and Science in the Arctic\, Dr. Lavelle will outline the long history of the U.S. role in the region\, how the past informs our present limitations and possibilities\, and why Ohioans should be paying attend to the future of Arctic engagement.

SUMMARY:The Abandonment of Sudan
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information will be sent to eligible members on Thursday\, October 16. \nCCFR is honored to host Ambassador Michelle Gavin\, Ralph Bunche senior fellow for Africa policy studies at the Council on Foreign Relations\, to discuss Sudan’s ongoing civil war and humanitarian crisis. Drawing upon her experiences as a former senior director for Africa at the National Security Council\, Ambassador Gavin will explain the national and international dynamics that have fanned the flames of civil war and created one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises. She will explore how many of the guard rails established by the rules-based international system have been eroded throughout the conflict\, and what this signals to the international community. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. SUMMARY:Constructing Peace: How Diplomats Change the World
DESCRIPTION:This event has reached capacity. Please email jconnell@ccwa.org to be placed on the wait list. \nIn a time when turmoil and conflict dominate the headlines\, it can be difficult to maintain belief in the often slow-moving process of diplomacy. Yet\, diplomacy remains a critically important method for facing and overcoming the challenges facing the United States and the world. Diplomatic endeavors have a long history of successes\, from the opening of China and the agreement to end the Vietnam War\, to the Abraham Accords. How can today’s seemingly insurmountable struggles be softened or solved by negotiation? What lessons from the past can we apply to the present? \nCCWA is honored to host Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat to share the lessons he has learned not just from studying modern diplomacy\, but actively practicing it. As author of the new book\, The Art of Diplomacy\, Ambassador Eizenstat will draw upon his wealth of experience from his distinguished career in public service\, as well as his numerous interviews with key figures in American diplomacy\, to suggest a framework for the U.S. to conduct successful negotiations. Ambassador Eizenstat will provide a 360-degree view of international negotiations at the highest level\, as he takes us behind-the-scenes of major international agreements from the Good Friday Agreement to the Kyoto Protocols and the Iranian Nuclear Accord. \nThroughout his career in public service across six presidential administrations\, Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat held a number of key senior positions\, including U.S. Ambassador to the European Union\, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade\, and Under Secretary of State for Economic\, Business and Agricultural Affairs\, among others. He served as Special Adviser on Holocaust-Era Issues to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of State John Kerry during the Obama Administration\, and held positions on the Defense Policy Board for Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. Currently\, Ambassador Eizenstat is Senior Counsel in Covington & Burling LLP’s international practice\, where he focuses on resolving international trade problems and business disputes with the U.S. and foreign governments. \nHe has written multiple books\, including Imperfect Justice (2003)\, President Carter: The White House Years (2018)\, and most recently\, The Art of Diplomacy (2024). Copies of The Art of Diplomacy will be available for purchase at the event.

SUMMARY:Making Sense of U.S. Policy in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. Walk-ins are not permitted. Please email jconnell@ccwa.org with questions. \nWelcome to the 2025-2026 Foreign Policy Forum season! To kick off the season\, CCWA is honored to host Brian Katulis\, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute\, to discuss the critically important\, yet often complicated\, U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. \nMr. Katulis will draw upon decades of experience living and working in the Middle East to analyze current and past administrations’ policies in the Middle East. The United States under President Trump has outlined a number of foreign policy priorities for the Middle East\, including deterrence of Iran\, countering terrorist networks\, and strengthening economic and technological cooperation with partners in the region. With the Israel-Gaza conflict nearing the two-year mark\, Syria working to rebuild\, and Iran continuing its nuclear program\, the region remains as tumultuous as ever. Does this administration have the capability to affect positive change? What does this administration’s version of peace look like? \nBrian Katulis is a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute\, specializing in U.S. foreign policy and national security. He hosts the MEI podcast series Taking the Edge Off the Middle East and authors the column “Making Sense: A Weekly Take on U.S. Foreign Policy.” As a foreign policy strategist and senior fellow\, Mr. Katulis has produced influential studies that have shaped key regional policy debates and provided expert testimony to congressional committees on his findings. Prior to MEI\, he was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress\, where he built the center’s Middle East program. His career also includes significant experience at the National Security Council\, the U.S. Department of State\, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members. \nCCFR is honored to host Rose Gottemoeller\, William J. Perry Lecturer at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies\, to discuss the future of European security. Drawing upon her experiences as the Deputy Secretary General of NATO from 2016 to 2019\, Ms. Gottemoeller will analyze how European nations are being forced to reassess their roles in regard to their national and regional security. She will examine the ways in which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to inform and influence Europe’s relationship with the U.S.\, and the ramifications of a more isolationist U.S. policy towards the continent. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. SUMMARY:The 30-Year War: Conflict in Africa's Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is typically exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests\, but for one time only\, all CCWA members are welcome to attend! \nSince 1996\, multiple waves of conflict have washed over the eastern areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo\, destabilizing the region and leading to the deaths of approximately 6 million people. While local ethnic tensions remain a flashpoint for violence\, the abundance of natural resources and grave human rights violations have globalized this conflict. To protect its mineral mines\, China has supported the Congolese government in the fight against rebel groups. Despite the need for regional stability amidst a staggering number of internally displaced people and millions more who suffer from food insecurity\, the role of international security forces has remained inconsistent and controversial. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is honored to host Mvemba Phezo Dizolele\, senior fellow and director of the Africa Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, to discuss the prolonged conflict at the heart of Africa’s Great Lakes region\, the forces shaping it\, and the road ahead. \nAre you a CCWA member interested in attending? Please email Jacob Connell at jconnell@ccwa.org. Diplomat and Ambassador members may register as normal via the link emailed directly to them. Registration will close at 5:00pm on Thursday\, May 29. \nPlease note that due to unforeseen complications with the Mr. Dizolele’s schedule\, this program has been rescheduled to June 4\, 2025.

SUMMARY:The Intersection of AI and National Security
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nThe United States faces a rapidly evolving geopolitical and security landscape that demands a refocusing of the U.S. defense agenda. The rise of artificial intelligence and advanced cyber technologies has greatly changed geopolitical calculations\, particularly in regard to competition with China. The ability to harness artificial intelligence is critically important for protecting U.S. interests at home and abroad. How has the emergence of artificial intelligence altered the nature of threats to national security? How must the U.S. military and defense industry adapt and modernize to meet these threats? \nCCFR is honored to host Melanie Sisson\, senior fellow in the Strobe Talbott Center for Security\, Strategy\, and Technology at The Brookings Institution\, to discuss the growing importance of artificial intelligence and other advanced technology\, specifically as it relates to technological competition between the U.S. and China. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Leading in a VUCA World: Global Business in Northeast Ohio
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Council on World Affairs is honored to host Frank Sullivan for the Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum on International Business. \nIn a world where marketplace circumstances change rapidly\, it is vital that global companies are prepared to shift and pivot their businesses accordingly. The shelf life of good strategies and practices is as short as its ever been. Whether due to recession\, pandemic\, or technological revolution\, practices that traditionally worked may suddenly prove to be detrimental\, and ideas that were outlandish become commonplace. How do companies set themselves up for success in a “volatile\, uncertain\, complex\, and ambiguous” (VUCA) world? \nFrank Sullivan\, chairman and chief executive officer of RPM International\, joins CCWA in an effort to answer this challenging question. Drawing upon over 20 years of experience leading RPM International\, Mr. Sullivan will discuss how he has sought to position the $7.3 billion\, multinational company for success in the short\, medium\, and long terms. However\, the story of RPM is not one free of trouble or disruption. Mr. Sullivan will provide candid commentary about the lessons he has learned\, both positive and negative\, while heading a global company in Northeast Ohio. \nHeadquartered in Medina\, Ohio\, RPM International is a Fortune 500 company with subsidiaries that are world leaders in specialty coatings\, sealants\, building materials\, and related services. Its products are sold across approximately 159 countries and territories worldwide. \nRegistration for this event has closed.

SUMMARY:Critical Minerals: How They Shape U.S. Policy
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nGeopolitical tension and conflict have driven the evolution of critical minerals policies in the U.S. for nearly a century. Today\, building resilient supply chains for critical minerals is one of the few issues that receives significant bipartisan support. Policymakers face the immense task of fortifying supplies of everything from lithium and graphite for advanced batteries to tungsten and rare earth elements for the next generation of military technologies. What are the policy decisions that can help the U.S. safeguard its critical minerals supply chains? Is it possible to secure these supply chains without ignoring or disrupting other aspects of U.S. foreign policy? \nCCFR is honored to host Gracelin Baskaran\, director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, to discuss the growing importance of critical minerals\, their supply chains\, and how they are influencing the future of U.S. foreign policy. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Women's Rights: The Fight to Expand Access and Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Among the many pressing challenges of our time\, one that demands greater attention is the global fight for women’s rights. Despite decades of progress that have enabled women and girls to secure access to education\, healthcare\, employment\, and political representation\, significant barriers to the full realization of their human rights persist. Alarmingly\, political forces worldwide are fueling a backlash against these hard-won gains. Nowhere is this more evident than in Afghanistan\, where the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 has ushered in some of the most egregious violations of women’s rights seen in modern history. \nThe unique and indispensable contributions of women to economic development\, community welfare\, and peace-building make this regression a profound threat to global stability. Recognizing the gravity of this crisis\, the United Nations Secretary-General has called gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls “the unfinished business of our time” and the greatest human rights challenge facing the world today. \nJoining the conversation to address this urgent issue\, as well as to shed light on efforts to safeguard women’s rights globally and in her home country of Afghanistan\, is Ambassador Roya Rahmani. Ambassador Rahmani has been a trailblazer for women in leadership\, serving as Afghanistan’s first female ambassador to the United States from 2018 to 2021 and as Afghanistan’s ambassador to Indonesia from 2016 to 2018. Currently\, she serves as the chair of Delphos International LTD\, a global financial advisory firm headquartered in Washington\, DC\, and a senior advisor at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center. Ambassador Rahmani holds a bachelor’s degree in software engineering from McGill University and a master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University. She has also served as a distinguished fellow at Georgetown University’s Global Institute for Women\, Peace and Security from 2021-2023.

SUMMARY:(Re)Organized Crime in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nOrganized\, transnational crime has become arguably the most important security threat to democratic governance in Latin America. As corruption and violence spread\, citizens become more and more willing to accept a tough-on-crime authoritarian leader. While some Latin American democracies have effectively contained threats from the military\, insurgents\, and oligopolists\, there has yet to be a case of a state truly defeating organized crime. What are the unique challenges that organized crime presents\, and why do these democracies lack a blueprint for effectively combating it? \nCCFR is honored to host Will Freeman\, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, to discuss the evolving nature of organized crime in Latin America\, the challenges of combating it\, and the integral role of the United States. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:A New Direction or More of the Same? The Future of U.S. Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. Contact Jacob Connell at jconnell@ccwa.org with questions. \nThe Cleveland Council on World Affairs is honored to host Richard Fontaine for the John A. Hellman Foreign Policy Forum. \nWith strategic competition with China\, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East\, ever-growing climate crises\, and a plethora of other pressing global issues\, the United States faces a new era of geopolitical challenges that the incoming administration in January 2025 will need to carefully navigate. Specifically with respect to China\, the last 13 years of American foreign policy have been largely defined by a strategic reorientation to view Asia as America’s priority region – strategically and economically. This was President Obama’s “Pivot to Asia”. Today\, the global landscape is being shaped by power competition involving China\, Russia\, Iran\, and North Korea that are challenging the U.S.-led world order in various ways\, forcing the U.S. to refresh its traditional focus on European allies and democracies\, among others. As a new administration takes office\, it is imperative to reflect on past foreign policy successes and failures and assess the areas in which U.S. foreign policy should remain consistent and where it needs to evolve. \nCCWA is honored to host Richard Fontaine\, Chief Executive Officer of the Center for a New American Security\, and co-author of “Lost Decade: The U.S. Pivot to Asia and the Rise of Chinese Power\,” to discuss the impact of the United States’ “Pivot to Asia” and the future direction of U.S. foreign policy. Should the U.S. continue to prioritize Asia before Europe? How would the U.S. do this while still upholding the commitments to allies in other regions? Drawing upon his experience working in the State Department\, National Security Council\, and on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee\, Mr. Fontaine will share his perspective on how the next administration could best reassure the world that the United States has good intentions\, competence\, leadership\, and staying power. \nMr. Fontaine’s book will be available for purchase before and after the program.

DESCRIPTION:As the Israel-Gaza conflict drags on\, the world’s attention remains fixed on the humanitarian crisis ignited by the conflict. CCWA is honored to host Ambassador David M. Satterfield\, U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues from October 2023 to April 2024\, to shed light on such a complex situation. Ambassador Satterfield will discuss the United States’ response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and touch on the many hurdles that obstruct humanitarian relief\, as well as how governments\, organizations\, and individuals problem-solve to overcome those hurdles. \nAmbassador David M. Satterfield has over four decades of diplomatic service and policy and management leadership experience in the United States and overseas in the Near East and Europe. He has served as assistant secretary of state\, National Security Council staff director\, ambassador to Lebanon and Turkey\, and chargé d’affaires in Iraq and Egypt. SUMMARY:Climate Change: When Water Bankruptcy and Human Security Collide
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, this event is canceled. Dr. Madani has been unexpectedly called to a meeting of the United Nations Environment Programme. We apologize for any inconvenience. \nAs we learn more about the impacts of climate change\, water is a key human resource threatened by our evolving climate. Water shortage is the major environmental problem of the 21st century. We are experiencing water bankruptcy at the global level – water resources are currently insufficient to meet demand – and water is intimately linked to food security\, energy production\, urbanization\, and development more broadly. As a result\, pressures from water shortages are underpinning social and political challenges around the globe. Conflict over water has increased significantly in the past decades. And the poor of the world suffer the most from water bankruptcy\, another stark reminder of global environmental injustice. \nThe question is how to understand these complex\, interlinked challenges so that we may land on the right solutions to ensure the sustainability of humans and their environments\, and safeguard life on our planet. How much is climate change contributing to water bankruptcy? How much are water shortages due to reversible human decisions? It is important to distinguish the factors contributing to water shortages and to develop a narrative that invites positive action to mitigate the problems. \nJoin us as Dr. Kaveh Madani addresses these questions. Dr. Madani is the Director of the United Nations University Institute for Water\, Environment and Health. He is a globally recognized environmental scientist\, educator\, and activist\, working on complex human-natural systems at the interface of science\, policy\, and society. He has over 200 publications worldwide on issues such as water management\, environmental policy\, energy systems\, food security\, climate change impacts\, and environmental security\, diplomacy\, and justice. He is also a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

SUMMARY:Global Population: Sorting Fact from Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed\, but walk-ups are welcome! \nOur global population of 8 billion is radically different than at any other time in human history — and it’s headed in an unprecedented direction. As we move deeper into the 21st century\, demographic shifts and migration crises increasingly dominate the headlines. Countries around the world are starting to face difficult questions related to their aging populations. Should governments enact policy designed to raise fertility rates? What role does migration play in balancing a work force? How will the world’s politics and the balance of geopolitical power change as the world’s population changes? Jennifer D. Sciubba\, Ph.D.\, will join CCWA to discuss common misconceptions about global population trends in births\, deaths\, and migration and why there is cause for optimism. \nDr. Sciubba is one of the foremost experts in the field of political demography. Her latest book\, 8 billion and Counting: How Sex\, Death\, and Migration Shape Our World (W.W. Norton 2022) argues that a deeper understanding of fertility\, mortality\, and migration trends points us toward the investments we need to make today to shape the future we want tomorrow. Dr. Sciubba works to educate the broader public about the importance of population trends by translating research for readers of The Atlantic\, Harvard Business Review\, The Washington Post\, and on the TED stage\, among other places\, in addition to publishing policy-relevant research in numerous scholarly articles and edited books. \nDr. Sciubba is affiliated with the Wilson Center and the Hess Center for New Frontiers at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. She is formerly a tenured professor at Rhodes College in Memphis\, Tennessee. Dr. Sciubba has studied at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock\, Germany\, and served as a demographics consultant to the US Office of the Secretary of Defense. Dr. Sciubba is Vice-Chair of the board of the Population Reference Bureau\, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Maryland and her B.A. from Agnes Scott College.

SUMMARY:India: The Emerging Geopolitical and Economic Power -- Prospects and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum on India for a discussion on the future of India as a global power. \nAs the global geopolitical order continues to evolve\, India\, soon to be the world’s third largest economy\, has emerged as a critical player on the world stage. Many questions surround what India’s prominence means for the nation\, the region\, and the world. Western nations see India as a strategic partner well-positioned to contain the rise of China\, and yet India is clearly shaping its own sense of its future. Among other ambitions\, the Narendra Modi government\, who referred to India with the Sanskrit name “Bharat” when hosting the G20 in September 2023\, is aiming to make India an advanced economy by 2047 to mark 100 years of independence. With so much potential for internal economic growth\, how does India want to project itself as a global power? Long hailed as the world’s largest democracy\, in what ways will India’s domestic policies shape its geopolitical trajectory? Dr. Ajay Chhibber\, a leading expert on Indian economic development\, joins the Cleveland Council on World Affairs to tackle these complex questions and discuss why India is poised to reshape the world. \nDr. Ajay Chhibber is a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Institute of International Economic Policy\, George Washington University\, and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council. He was India’s first Director General of Independent Evaluation with the status of Minister of State in 2013-2014 and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the National Institute for Public Finance and Policy. From 2008-2013 he served as United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Assistant Administrator at the United Nations Development Programme. He served as the World Bank’s Country Director in Turkey and Vietnam and led the 1997 World Development Report on the role of the state. He has published six books on economic development and many articles in international journals and major newspapers. His latest book\, co-authored with Salman Soz\, Unshackling India: Hard Truths and Clear Choices for Economic Revival (Harper-Collins) was declared the Best New Book in Economics for 2022 in the Financial Times and won the India Economic Forum Literary Award for 2022. He has a PhD from Stanford University\, a master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics\, and has completed advanced management programs at Harvard University and INSEAD\, France. He has also taught economics at Georgetown University and the University of Delhi. \nRegistration for this event has closed. Please contact Jacob Connell at jconnell@ccwa.org with questions.

SUMMARY:The Global Economic and Geopolitical Outlook for 2024: More Uncertainty Ahead?
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. Please contact Jacob Connell at jconnell@ccwa.org with questions. \nThe global economy has been battered by a series of crises in recent years\, and 2024 appears likely to be another year of economic and geopolitical instability. This outlook is due to a confluence of factors: financial sector turmoil\, high inflation\, ongoing effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, and the lingering impacts of three years of COVID. Moreover\, the extreme weather events of this summer – extreme heat\, violent storms\, wildfires in some parts of the globe and flooding in others – have all come with a cost to the global economy. As a result\, the International Monetary Fund forecasts that global growth will continue to decline in 2024\, particularly in advanced economies. \nTo provide greater insights into the data and the underlying trends\, join us to hear from Michael Weidokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). ISA provides country intelligence\, economic forecasting\, and international market studies for many of the world’s leading companies\, including Amazon\, Lockheed Martin\, Ford\, Siemens and FedEx. Mr. Weidokal will provide his thoughts on how the global economy is shaping up for 2024\, and how you can prepare for the changes that lie in store for the coming year.

SUMMARY:The Bin Laden Papers: Exposing the U.S. Misunderstanding of Terrorism
DESCRIPTION:Registration is closed for this event. \n  \nIn early May 2011\, U.S. Special Operations Forces raided Usama Bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad\, Pakistan\, where he was hiding and ended his leadership of al-Qaeda\, the terrorist group responsible for the 9/11 attacks. How accurate were U.S. assessments of al-Qaeda’s capabilities and its leader’s plans?  A national expert on al-Qaeda\, Dr. Lahoud distilled the nearly 6\,000 Arabic pages of Bin Laden’s private communications that were retrieved during the Abbottabad raid. Her book\, The Bin Laden Papers: How the Abbottabad Raid Revealed the Truth about Al-Qaeda\, Its Leader and His Family\, shows a disparity between the U.S. assessment of al-Qaeda and the actual reality of the group and its leader. Her findings further highlight the ongoing challenge that the U.S. national security apparatus grapples with: How can we gain an understanding of terrorism to counter it effectively? \nThe Bin Laden Papers will be available for purchase\, and at the conclusion of the program\, Dr. Lahoud will hold a brief book signing. You can watch Dr. Lahoud discuss her findings on 60 Minutes here. \nBorn in Beirut\, Lebanon\, Nelly Lahoud’s research interest in the Islamic tradition led her to focus on the ideology and evolution of al-Qaeda and the ‘Islamic State’ (ISIS/ISIL). She is currently an associate professor in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College and a senior fellow in New America’s International Security program. She has a Ph.D. from the Research School of Social Sciences — Australian National University. She was a postdoctoral scholar at St. John’s College\, University of Cambridge — UK; Rockefeller Fellow in Islamic studies at the Library of Congress; and research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs\, Harvard University. Her previous appointments include being associate professor at the Department of Social Sciences and senior associate at the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; and assistant professor of political theory at Goucher College.

SUMMARY:Lessons from the Edge: Ukraine in Crisis | A Luncheon Event
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on the events that led to her removal as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine in 2019\, Marie “Masha” Yovanovitch has a stark but hopeful story to tell of the dedication of foreign service officers and her own career. Moving up through the ranks of the State Department\, Yovanovitch leveraged her intelligence and work ethic to arrive at the post of Ambassador to Ukraine in 2016. Her endeavors to encourage democracy\, support anti-corruption efforts\, and advance U.S. interests and values in Ukraine no doubt left a lasting impression that continues to inform the policies of a country now under direct military attack. Please join us for a special luncheon and book signing event with the ambassador. \nBooks will be available at the event for purchase through a partnership with Visible Voice Books. Please consider pre-ordering your book as 15% of proceeds from pre-sales will be donated to Cleveland Council on World Affairs. To order your book in advance\, please click here.  \n—

SUMMARY:International Women of Courage: Honoring the 2023 Awardees
DESCRIPTION:The International Women of Courage Award given by the U.S. Secretary of State recognizes extraordinary women from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional courage\, strength\, and leadership in advocating for peace\, justice\, human rights\, gender equity\, and the empowerment of women and girls\, in all their diversity\, often at great personal risk and sacrifice. Since the inception of the International Women of Courage Award in March 2007\, the U.S. Department of State has recognized more than 170 women from over 80 countries. \nOn March 14\, 2023\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs will welcome two of the 2023 honorees to share their stories and help us mark International Women’s Day by recognizing the incredible work that they are leading in their respective countries. \nProfessor Danièle Darlan\, the former President of the Central African Republic’s Constitutional Court\, has earned the title of an International Woman of Courage for her defense of her nation’s constitution\, her heroism in safeguarding judicial independence\, and her refusal to be influenced by threats or political pressure. \nSenator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi has spent most of her professional life advancing and promoting human rights\, selflessly advocating for vulnerable populations and using her platforms to shed light on injustices in Malaysian society.  Ras Adiba also became a national Paralympic sharpshooter and earned a spot in the Malaysian Book of Records for ‘wheeling’ 420km in 13 days from Johor Bharu to Putrajaya in her wheelchair. \nPlease note that the event will be partially in French with English interpretation. \nThis event is sold out.
