SUMMARY:Reluctant Conquest: America's Relationship with the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information will be sent to eligible members on Thursday\, October 30. \nCCWA is honored to host Dr. Kathryn Lavelle\, Ellen and Dixon Long Professor of World Affairs at Case Western Reserve University\, to share her insights on the past\, present\, and future of America’s relationship with the Arctic region. The strategic and economic value of this vast region is on the rise\, as climate change opens up new shipping lanes and increases the potential to exploit the region’s natural resources. Meanwhile\, Russia’s military presence in the Arctic continues to expand – as does as does NATO’s\, thanks to the induction of new members Sweden and Finland. Drawing upon her research for her new book\, Reluctant Conquest: American Wealth\, Power\, and Science in the Arctic\, Dr. Lavelle will outline the long history of the U.S. role in the region\, how the past informs our present limitations and possibilities\, and why Ohioans should be paying attend to the future of Arctic engagement. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. To join\, renew\, or upgrade your membership\, please click here.
