SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Why and How Americans Should Care About the War in Yemen
DESCRIPTION:For the last three years Yemen\, one of the poorest Arab countries\, has been devastated by a civil war that has killed nearly 10\,000 people and pushed millions to the brink of starvation. Propelled by the Arab uprisings in 2011\, Yemeni society peacefully mobilized protests and forced its long ruling president\, Ali Abdullah Saleh\, to step down. Today\, Yemen finds itself mired in a violent contest between northern rebel groups and Saudi and Emirati forces. \nHorrific human rights abuses\, as well as war crimes\, are being committed throughout the country by all parties to the conflict\, causing the United Nations to characterize Yemen as the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis to date. As a result\, there are bipartisan efforts in Congress underway to stop U.S. involvement in the civil war. What effect will they have? What has been the United States’ role in this conflict to date – and what future role should it hold in a quest for peace? \nJoin the Cleveland Council on World Affairs\, The City Club of Cleveland\, International Partners in Mission\, Global Cleveland\, and the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies as WCPN’s Tony Ganzer talks with Stacey Philbrick Yadav. Yadav has lived in Yemen and is a member of the executive committee of the American Institute of Yemeni Studies; she will discuss the economic and geopolitical implications the continuing war in Yemen has for the United States and its allies. Additionally\, Yadav is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

DESCRIPTION:Systems that incorporate juries into the legal decision-making process can significantly impact a country’s political system\, political culture\, and society. Bodies of average citizens can function as powerful tools in educating\, ensuring justice\, and enhancing the judiciary’s credibility. They also provide a valuable civic engagement tool that enables self-governance and facilitates checks on individuals\, industry\, and government. \nAs societies face rapid change and related challenges\, many nations are searching for potential solutions. Many civic reformers view jury systems both as a partial solution and means of compelling positive political\, economic\, and social change. In fact\, the major players in Asia and several other countries around the world have integrated lay participation into the administration of justice over the past 15 years in an effort to effect change\, advance public policy-making\, and manifest popular sovereignty. These bold moves stand in stark contrast to other parts of the world where established jury systems have been criticized\, attacked\, and even face diminished use. \nJoin the Cleveland Council on World Affairs\, The City Club of Cleveland\, International Partners in Mission\, Global Cleveland\, and the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies as WCPN’s Tony Ganzer talks with University of Akron Professor of Law Matthew J. SUMMARY:Bridges to the World Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bridges to the World is a series of interactive workshops that examine the key elements of global education and explore a multitude of resources for educators to foster global competence in their classrooms. The semester-long professional development program will train a cohort of educators in middle and high school classrooms to become confident instructors in global education. The initiative will offer educational resources and professional development opportunities for teachers in the realms of world affairs\, geopolitical issues and U.S. foreign policy. \nParticipating teachers will be required to attend three workshops to evaluate and reflect upon implementation of resources in the classroom. The workshops lead a cohort of participants through the four stages of global competency\, using the Asia Society framework. Participants will learn how to engage students in current events and international issues through investigating the world\, recognizing the perspectives of others\, communicating their ideas and taking action.

Please join us for a special forum\, “The United States and Japan: 2019 and Beyond\,” which will explore the multifaceted relationship between our two countries. \nThis forum will coincide with the special exhibition Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art. Docents will be available to answer questions. \nOur speakers will include Dr. Shigeo Kagami\, Professor at The University of Tokyo\, and Dr. Andrew Oros\, Director of International Studies at Washington College. \nDr. Shigeo Kagami is a Professor and General Manager of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at The University of Tokyo in Japan. In this role\, Dr. Kagami works to achieve university-industry collaborations to implement specific research outcomes within Tokyo and to create joint research projects. Dr. Kagami will focus on Japan’s economy and how government policy makers can work to assist Japan’s economic recovery from two decades of depression. \nDr. Andrew Oros is a Professor of Political Science and International Studies\, Associate Dean for International Education\, and the Director of International Studies at Washington College. Dr. Oros is an expert on comparative East Asian politics and is the author or co-author of three books on Japan’s security policies. DESCRIPTION:CCWA is looking for internationally-minded host families for Fulbright scholars from around the world on August 2-4\, 2019. \nBack for an eighth year\, CCWA will again be partnering with Ohio University to host 44 Fulbright graduate students in Cleveland for the weekend. All Fulbright scholars speak English and will be studying in graduate programs across the U.S. They are here in Ohio for an orientation program and will come to Cleveland to spend a fun “weekend in the city” with host families. Hosts will pick up their Fulbrighter on Friday\, August 2 at Lakewood Park\, spend a free day exploring the city and engaging in fun cultural activities\, and drop their Fulbrighter back off at Lakewood Park on Sunday\, August 4. \nThe program will begin with a Welcome Picnic at Lakewood Park at 6:00 pm on August 2. SUMMARY:Bridges to the World Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bridges to the World is a series of interactive workshops that examine the key elements of global education and explore a multitude of resources for educators to foster global competence in their classrooms. The semester-long professional development program will train a cohort of educators in middle and high school classrooms to become confident instructors in global education. The initiative will offer educational resources and professional development opportunities for teachers in the realms of world affairs\, geopolitical issues and U.S. foreign policy. \nParticipating teachers will be required to attend three workshops to evaluate and reflect upon implementation of resources in the classroom. The workshops lead a cohort of participants through the four stages of global competency\, using the Asia Society framework. Participants will learn how to engage students in current events and international issues through investigating the world\, recognizing the perspectives of others\, communicating their ideas and taking action.
