SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: How America Confronts Terror
DESCRIPTION:For the past 17 years\, much of American national security has been focused on preventing another terrorist attack. To that end\, the United States has invested countless resources in battling ISIS\, the Taliban\, and other forms of extreme terrorism around the globe. \nIn December\, President Donald J. Trump announced he was pulling 2\,000 American troops out of Syria and 7\,000 American troops out of Afghanistan\, signaling his belief that the war on terror has been won. These decisions were not supported by many military and intelligence officials – Secretary of Defense James Mattis publicly resigned in response – who believe continued military involvement is necessary to ensure stability. \nSo\, what happens now? How has the war on terror evolved over the years – and are we able to declare an end to this war? How will these decisions affect not only American military efforts\, but those of our allies? And\, what steps need to be taken to continue to protect our national security against threats? \nJoin the Cleveland Council on World Affairs\, the City Club of Cleveland\, Global Cleveland\, International Partners in Mission\, and the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies (NOCMES) for a conversation with Joshua A. Gelzer\, J.D.\, Ph.D.\, one of the nation’s leading voices in counterterrorism\, about America’s continued war on terror.

SUMMARY:America Alone: The Consequences of an America First Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:The United States’ leadership has drastically changed over the past two years: the United States has abandoned the Paris Climate Accords\, the Iran nuclear deal\, the North American Free Trade Agreement\, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership to name a few major changes. President Trump’s first two years in office have sent the message that America is no longer interested in supporting our traditional allies and friends. Instead\, U.S. policy is to put America first whenever possible. \nJames Lindsay\, the Senior Vice President and Director of Studies at the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)\, will join the Cleveland Council on World Affairs for a Foreign Policy Forum to discuss America’s role in today’s world. Lindsay argues that the pillars of postwar foreign policy that America has traditionally upheld\, including strong alliances\, open markets\, and commitment to democracy\, are all threatened by the current U.S. leadership. What does this shifting role in foreign policy mean for the United States? What should American allies expect from the Trump Administration in the years to come? \nCopies of Lindsay’s latest book\, “The Empty Throne: America’s Abdication of Global Leadership” will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis program is made possible\, in part\, by the Ohio Humanities\, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $10; Members $5; Students FREE \nLocation: The Union Club\, Wedgwood Room. 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nThis event is sold out- we hope to see you next time! The event will be recorded as part of our “Global Conversations” podcast\, so check the website soon to tune in.

SUMMARY:Cleveland International Film Festival: The Pursuit
DESCRIPTION:CCWA is proud to be a community partner again at this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival. Our partner film\, The Pursuit\, will be screening on March 28 at 4:45PM\, March 29 at 7:40PM and March 31 at 9:30AM. Use the code CCWA to receive a discount when purchasing tickets. \nAbout the film: \nAward-winning economist\, Arthur Brooks\, places himself at the intersection of culture and politics in The Pursuit\, a thought-provoking documentary exploring our global economy and its impact on the citizens of the world. The film travels the globe seeking understanding of impoverished communities and their progress—or stagnation—as a result of capitalism\, socialistic ideals\, and state-run welfare systems. While many immigrants to the United States and newly independent nations sought freedom from socialist governments to benefit from capitalism\, the present-day political climate complicates both economies\, leaving plenty of room for healthy discussion. Brooks visits the bustling streets of Mumbai\, a once-thriving coal mining town in Kentucky\, the presumably happiest nation of Denmark\, a street rally in Barcelona\, Spain\, and an Indian monastery for a truly global view on these topics. Rather than embracing a definitive political stance\, The Pursuit offers an opportunity for genuine conversation about individuals’ opinions\, experiences\, and views of the best ways we can all support each other—regardless of class or social status—in our pursuit of happiness. \nFilm Forum: \nAfter the March 28 screening\, join us for a discussion on the question: If capitalism is the answer\, then what’s the question? \nPanelists\nSusan Helper\, Ph.D.; Frank Tracy Carlton Professor of Economics\, Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University\nJohn Papola; Director\, “The Pursuit”\nMarcus R. Schultz-Bergin\, Ph.D.; Assistant College Lecturer\, Department of Philosophy & Comparative Religion\, Cleveland State University\nMark E. SUMMARY:Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland and Cuyahoga County are at the near center of the nation-wide crisis (Cuyahoga County alone has seen a 1\,000 percent increase in opioid deaths since 2007). In this Multi-Regional Project\, visitors from Afghanistan\, Cyprus\, Morocco\, Seychelles\, China\, and Russia will visit Cleveland to address the current opioid abuse crisis\, health promotion strategies\, demand reduction strategies\, and current trends in understanding addiction. Given how serious the issue is\, a wide-range of resource and partnership initiatives have emerged in the last few years to address addiction\, treatment\, and prevention. The Cuyahoga County Opiate Task Force\, made up of over 50 multi-sector partners\, is a great example of collaboration to educate the community on this issue. Another resource to highlight is Project DAWN\, a state initiative implemented at a local hospital to provide naloxone that has been credited with saving 300+ lives. \nInternational Visitor Leadership (IVLP) Program \nEach year\, over 300 professionals from around the world visit Northeast Ohio through IVLP. SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Why and How Americans Should Care About the War in Yemen
DESCRIPTION:For the last three years Yemen\, one of the poorest Arab countries\, has been devastated by a civil war that has killed nearly 10\,000 people and pushed millions to the brink of starvation. Propelled by the Arab uprisings in 2011\, Yemeni society peacefully mobilized protests and forced its long ruling president\, Ali Abdullah Saleh\, to step down. Today\, Yemen finds itself mired in a violent contest between northern rebel groups and Saudi and Emirati forces. \nHorrific human rights abuses\, as well as war crimes\, are being committed throughout the country by all parties to the conflict\, causing the United Nations to characterize Yemen as the world’s most severe humanitarian crisis to date. As a result\, there are bipartisan efforts in Congress underway to stop U.S. involvement in the civil war. What effect will they have? What has been the United States’ role in this conflict to date – and what future role should it hold in a quest for peace? \nJoin the Cleveland Council on World Affairs\, The City Club of Cleveland\, International Partners in Mission\, Global Cleveland\, and the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies as WCPN’s Tony Ganzer talks with Stacey Philbrick Yadav. Yadav has lived in Yemen and is a member of the executive committee of the American Institute of Yemeni Studies; she will discuss the economic and geopolitical implications the continuing war in Yemen has for the United States and its allies. Additionally\, Yadav is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
