SUMMARY:Jóvenes en Acción: Mexico Youth Exchange Program
DESCRIPTION:This summer CCWA is hosting a cohort of high school students from Mexico on a program called Jóvenes en Acción.  Each weekday the students are engaged in workshops and programming on leadership and social entrepreneurship. We are in need of home stay hosts to accommodate one or two students from July 9 – 21\, 2025. For more information\, please contact Andrew Kovach\, Director of Exchange Programs\, at akovach@ccwa.org. \nFor interested hosts: Each student must have their own bed\, though they may share a room with a student of the same gender. (Air mattresses are not permitted.) We ask that students be provided breakfast and that they be included in family meals in the evening. During the day on weekdays\, students will be engaged in educational programming\, and transportation and lunches will be provided by CCWA. Students have weekends and most evenings free to spend time with their host families. A home visit and background check must be completed prior to hosting.

DESCRIPTION:CCWA is looking for internationally-minded host families for Fulbright scholars from Brazil on July 25-27\, 2025. \nCCWA will be partnering with Ohio University to host Brazilian Fulbright English language instructors in Cleveland for the weekend. All Fulbright scholars speak English. They are here in Ohio for a teacher training program and will come to Cleveland to spend a fun “weekend in the city” with host families. Hosts will pick up their Fulbright scholar on Friday\, July 25\, from the pavilions at Lakewood Park\, spend a free day exploring the city and engaging in fun cultural activities\, and drop their Fulbright scholar back off at Lakewood Park on Sunday\, July 27. \nThe program will begin with a welcome reception at Lakewood Park at 4:00 pm on July 25.

SUMMARY:Making Sense of U.S. Policy in the Middle East

To kick off the season\, CCWA is honored to host Brian Katulis\, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute\, to discuss the critically important\, yet often complicated\, U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. \nMr. Katulis will draw upon decades of experience living and working in the Middle East to analyze current and past administrations’ policies in the Middle East. The United States under President Trump has outlined a number of foreign policy priorities for the Middle East\, including deterrence of Iran\, countering terrorist networks\, and strengthening economic and technological cooperation with partners in the region.  With the Israel-Gaza conflict nearing the two-year mark\, Syria working to rebuild\, and Iran continuing its nuclear program\, the region remains as tumultuous as ever. Does this administration have the capability to affect positive change? What does this administration’s version of peace look like? \nBrian Katulis is a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute\, specializing in U.S. foreign policy and national security. He hosts the MEI podcast series Taking the Edge Off the Middle East and authors the column “Making Sense: A Weekly Take on U.S. Foreign Policy.”  As a foreign policy strategist and senior fellow\, Mr. Katulis has produced influential studies that have shaped key regional policy debates and provided expert testimony to congressional committees on his findings. Prior to MEI\, he was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress\, where he built the center’s Middle East program. His career also includes significant experience at the National Security Council\, the U.S. Department of State\, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

SUMMARY:Constructing Peace: How Diplomats Change the World

Yet\, diplomacy remains a critically important method for facing and overcoming the challenges facing the United States and the world. Diplomatic endeavors have a long history of successes\, from the opening of China and the agreement to end the Vietnam War\, to the Abraham Accords. How can today’s seemingly insurmountable struggles be softened or solved by negotiation? What lessons from the past can we apply to the present? \nCCWA is honored to host Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat to share the lessons he has learned not just from studying modern diplomacy\, but actively practicing it. As author of the new book\, The Art of Diplomacy\, Ambassador Eizenstat will draw upon his wealth of experience from his distinguished career in public service\, as well as his numerous interviews with key figures in American diplomacy\, to suggest a framework for the U.S. to conduct successful negotiations. Ambassador Eizenstat will provide a 360-degree view of international negotiations at the highest level\, as he takes us behind-the-scenes of major international agreements from the Good Friday Agreement to the Kyoto Protocols and the Iranian Nuclear Accord. \nThroughout his career in public service across six presidential administrations\, Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat held a number of key senior positions\, including U.S. Ambassador to the European Union\, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade\, and Under Secretary of State for Economic\, Business and Agricultural Affairs\, among others. He served as Special Adviser on Holocaust-Era Issues to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of State John Kerry during the Obama Administration\, and held positions on the Defense Policy Board for Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. Currently\, Ambassador Eizenstat is Senior Counsel in Covington & Burling LLP’s international practice\, where he focuses on resolving international trade problems and business disputes with the U.S. and foreign governments. \nHe has written multiple books\, including Imperfect Justice (2003)\, President Carter: The White House Years (2018)\, and most recently\, The Art of Diplomacy (2024). Cleveland’s world-class healthcare\, manufacturing\, and technology industries rely on raw materials and components from Canada\, Mexico\, Germany\, China\, Japan\, and many more. And yet\, decades-old assumptions about how international trade works have been upended in the last five years\, first by the supply chain disruptions of the pandemic and then by the rapidly evolving trade policies of the Trump Administration. Join CCWA and the Port of Cleveland as we take a closer look at this issue and what it means for Cleveland. \nThe Port of Cleveland is on the front lines of changes in global supply chains and the impacts of tariffs. DESCRIPTION:This fall CCWA is seeking families in the Cleveland area to host one or two students from Friday\, October 24 – Tuesday\, November 4\, 2025. This is an exchange through the U.S. Department of State’s Youth Ambassadors Latin America program. This program is for high school age students from Costa Rica\, Guatemala\, Nicaragua\, and Panama to travel to the U.S. for a leadership\, civic engagement\, and entrepreneurship focused learning program. Each weekday the students are engaged in workshops\, site visits\, and community activities with CCWA. Host families must have a strong proficiency in Spanish. However\, sports diplomacy — the application of sports to international diplomacy — is a much newer area of development within international relations\, but one that could potentially have a wide global impact. With the United States hosting the World Cup in 2026\, the Olympics in 2028\, and the Winter Olympics in 2034\, the U.S. is entering a decade in which it will be front and center on the stage of international sports. How might sports diplomacy help the U.S. make the most of this unique opportunity? \nTo better understand the impact of sports diplomacy on both a global and local level\, CCWA’s CEO Marti Flacks will lead a conversation with Travis Murphy\, CEO of Jetr Global Sports\, and Mike Mulhall\, Senior VP at the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. They will cover a range of topics\, from the role that sports can play in bilateral relations between two countries\, to the involvement of private corporations and teams\, to how Cleveland can leverage sports diplomacy for its benefit. \nTravis Murphy is a recognized global leader in sports diplomacy\, immigration\, and government affairs. His expertise was instrumental in securing Brittany Griner’s release from unlawful detention in Russia in 2022. \nMike Mulhall is the Senior Vice President\, Business Development & Revenue for Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In this role\, he provides leadership to the organization’s operations group\, partner alliances and bid process for future events. The frequency of major world events and the ever-increasing pace of technological change has made it difficult to accurately assess the global economic situation. This uncertainty creates challenges for individuals and businesses around the globe\, including here in Cleveland. To help make sense of the evolving economic environment\, CCWA is joined by Michael Weidokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). \nMr. Weidokal will provide his thoughts on how the global economy is shaping up for 2026\, risk factors to be aware of\, and how you can prepare for the changes that lie in store for the coming year. Throughout its term\, Slovenia addressed the most pressing issues\, upheld its values\, and shared its expertise globally to maintain international peace and security. \nMore recently\, in its final month as a member of the UN Security Council\, Slovenia held the Presidency for the second time. A visit to Syria and Lebanon was on the agenda\, as well as topics related to Bosnia\, Sudan\, Palestine\, Afghanistan\, and others. At the helm is Ambassador Samuel Žbogar\, who brings a wealth of policy knowledge and experience to the table. There may be few others with such timely insights on global affairs that have recently dominated the headlines. \nIn addition to his term in the Security Council\, Ambassador Žbogar has had an impressive diplomatic career. Please note that this event will be held at the Parma-Snow Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. \nBarely two months ago\, in a move many now see as foreshadowing U.S. action in Iran\, the U.S. military launched an operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and bring him to the United States to stand trial. Many people in Venezuela and around the world were grateful to see the demise of Maduro’s brutal and corrupt regime\, but the U.S. move left open critical questions about the future of governance in Venezuela\, as well as what the U.S. action means for our global posture towards our adversaries\, including Cuba and elsewhere. \nCCWA is honored to host Ambassador William (Bill) Brownfield to discuss these timely issues. Ambassador Brownfield is a former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela and former Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement\, and will provide his unique perspective and analysis on the future of Venezuela\, U.S. involvement there\, and how these events may shape U.S. relations across the Western Hemisphere.
