DESCRIPTION:CCWA is looking for internationally-minded host families for Fulbright scholars from around the world on July 29-31\, 2022. \nCCWA will be partnering with Ohio University to host 35 Fulbright graduate students in Cleveland for the weekend. All Fulbright scholars speak English and will be studying in graduate programs across the U.S. They are here in Ohio for an orientation program and will come to Cleveland to spend a fun “weekend in the city” with host families. Hosts will pick up their Fulbright scholar on Friday\, July 29 at Lakewood Park\, spend a free day exploring the city and engaging in fun cultural activities\, and drop their Fulbright scholar back off at Lakewood Park on Sunday\, July 31. \nThe program will begin with a Welcome Picnic at Lakewood Park at 6:00 pm on July 29. Drawing comparisons between economic dislocation in places like the Rust Belt\, manufacturing regions of England and the former Soviet Union\, Dr. Hill exposes the fragility of democracy as a global political system. After her years serving as senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council\, she has returned to Brookings as a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at the Center on the United States and Europe. \nFiona Hill is a senior fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings. From 2017 to 2019\, she recently served as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council. DESCRIPTION:In a world where conflicts most often make our news headlines\, the connections that art can create across countries and cultures are perhaps more vital than ever. These connections are multifaceted: sometimes art creates space for unique international partnerships to flourish\, sometimes music transcends conflict in ways than no diplomatic effort could\, and sometimes art simply brings people together across cultures. Artistic connectivity is very rich in large global cities. International connections through art are also happening here in Cleveland in ways that expand our horizons and enrich our cultural experience. Moreover\, the recovery has been very uneven\, largely reflecting strong rebounds in certain major economies. Whereas in many developing economies\, poverty rates have risen\, and debt levels are high. As a result\, the global outlook remains subject to significant downside risks\, including the possibility of additional COVID-19 surges and financial stress due to debt burdens. \nJoin us for our first Foreign Policy Forum of 2022 with Michael Wiedokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). SUMMARY:Jóvenes en Acción - Mexico Youth Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Council on World Affairs is seeking internationally-minded families to virtually welcome one or two high-achieving high school students from Mexico! Students will engage in programming focused on Mayan and English language learning\, tech education\, financial literacy\, and empowering tomorrow’s leaders. \nThe students are participating in the Jóvenes en Acción (“Youth in Action”) exchange program that provides high school students from Mexico to engage with resources in the United States to build leadership\, communication\, English language\, and community engagement skills. Participants engage in synchronous and asynchronous workshops\, online activities\, meetings with community leaders\, and site visits. Participants are developing service projects they will plan to implement in their home communities. This program is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State\, the Mexican government\, and the private sector. \nThe virtual home stay component will help familiarize students with culture and family life in the Cleveland area.  CCWA is looking for virtual host families who would like to welcome one or two students during two or three self-directed virtual interactions between October 13 – November 7\, 2021. Exact meeting dates and times are flexible and based on you and your student’s availability. There is a priority for families with at least one member of high school age. The rapid take-over of Kabul by the Taliban has prompted debate about the future of Afghanistan\, the impact of U.S. policy decisions\, and the moral responsibility that America bears following its decades of intervention. What lessons can the United States learn from our prolonged engagement? Join us for this Foreign Policy Forum with Adam Weinstein\, from the Quincy Institute\, who will offer his thoughts on such lessons and discuss prospects for Afghanistan and for the United States’ future engagement in the region. \nAdam Weinstein is a Research Fellow with the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He previously worked for KPMG’s international trade practice and assisted multinational clients in navigating Asia’s changing trade landscape\, managing sanctions risk\, and utilizing free trade agreements. Join us virtually for a conversation about Chancellor Merkel’s legacy\, the outlook for the elections and the likely implications for Germany of this historical leadership transition with Stefan Kornelius\, Foreign Editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung and author of a biography of Angela Merkel. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Security Studies. It has become clear over the last two decades that neither American diplomacy nor a presence on the ground has been able to transform the region. From the ongoing war in Syria\, to proxy wars across the Middle East\, and power competition amongst regional rivals\, there are no easy answers for U.S. engagement and policy-making in the region. Without reshaping our own diplomatic efforts\, it is increasingly unlikely that the United States will be able to push an agenda in the region. SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: 10 Years of War in Syria
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2011\, protestors took to the streets in Syria to show solidarity with the growing pro-democracy movements in Libya\, Egypt\, and Tunisia. Across the region\, these protests sparked a domino effect of citizens taking to the streets to demand democratic reforms and greater freedoms; on a larger scale\, this period became known as the Arab Spring. In Syria\, however\, the initial uprisings were followed by a government and military crackdown\, successive resignations from Syrian government officials\, human rights abuses\, and an exodus of thousands of Syrian residents. This shaped the start of the Syrian Civil War. \nTen years after the first protests began\, the brutal violence has subsided\, but peace remains elusive. An estimated 593\,000 people have died\, more than 11 million currently need humanitarian assistance\, approximately six million people are displaced within Syria\, and more than million Syrian refugees have relocated across the globe. Outside of the humanitarian disaster and need for assistance\, the Syrian conflict has numerous domestic actors competing for government control as well as larger geopolitical implications\, as the U.S.\, Iran\, Russia\, and Turkey all have a hand at the table. \nJoin us for a conversation on the state of affairs in Syria\, 10 years since those first uprisings\, and what the ongoing instability there means for the region. \n\nSpeaker\n\nRobert S. In the process\, they worked to make women’s equality a reality. These female fighters were intent on defeating the Islamic State and on changing women’s lives in the Middle East and beyond.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWomen’s contributions to matters of war and peace\, foreign policy\, national security\, and even combat on battlefields have often been overlooked. With each passing year\, there is a growing recognition of these contributions\, as women leaders shape policy around the world. In recent conflicts and wars\, women activists have bravely led protests to call for change or end violence. A few have joined peace negotiation processes. Women have also taken to the battlefield to protect their families\, nations\, and cultures. Join us as we take a look at the changing norms around women on the battlefield and their role in foreign policy.Ms. Tzemach Lemmon’s previous book\, Ashley’s War\, tells the story of another group of female fighters hoping to change the narrative about women and war: American soldiers who served as part of U.S. special operations. DESCRIPTION:This forum is presented in partnership with The City Club of Cleveland and the Cleveland International Film Festival. \nThe crisis in Venezuela has been making headlines for years. As violence erupts in the streets\, people without food\, water\, or electricity have been fleeing the country in droves. Unsustainable economic practices compounded by Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian reign has created the perfect storm for a national catastrophe\, and has inspired enormous demonstrations throughout the country\, uniting people of all walks of life against the corrupt institutions that hold them down. \nThis ongoing humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela was captured in the riveting documentary A La Calle\, which tells the story of the Venezuelan people’s attempts to reclaim their country’s democracy. SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Why Rust Belts Matter Around the World
DESCRIPTION:In America and other Western democracies\, older industrial communities are in a painful process of economic transition. These geographic regions were once economic powerhouses\, but have experienced a decline in manufacturing\, and a subsequent decline in local economies\, property taxes\, education\, and other community assets. Research has shown that when election season rolls around\, residents of these geographic regions are also increasingly likely to latch onto populist candidates like Donald Trump or Marine Le Pen. \nNeopopulism thrives in rust belt communities across the globe – communities where residents are responsive to the messages of nationalism\, nativism\, retreat from the international community\, and nostalgia for days gone by offered up by right-wing populists. Yet\, evidence also suggests that when these communities have economic hope\, the appeal of populism wanes. SUMMARY:Why Is It So Hard To Talk About Climate Change?
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nOur community partners for this forum are The Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve University and CWRU Center for International Affairs. \nClimate change is one area where politics\, economics\, and science come together to create an all-encompassing challenge that must be met by leaders worldwide. Unfortunately\, it is clear that the causes\, effects\, and policies needed to counter climate change are a point of contention\, as everything regarding climate change has become politically divisive. Global issues require global responses and there is no agreement on whether or how the international community can coordinate approaches to the many challenges involving energy\, environment\, and fiscal responsibilities. Molly Williamson\, a retired Foreign Service Officer and current scholar with the Middle East Institute\, will explore key factors confounding policy makers and political leaders\, both foreign and domestic. \nMolly Williamson is a retired Foreign Service Officer\, who served six different presidents\, and achieved the rank of Career Minister. Williamson speaks extensively on energy\, economic and demographic factors affecting foreign policy formulation\, US-Middle East relations\, especially regional unrest\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, Iran and nuclear challenges\, and the interagency process. \nShe is a scholar with the Middle East Institute and the National Council on US-Arab Relations\, a consultant\, and frequent guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University\, the Defense Institute of Security Cooperation\, and the National Joint Staff College. Williamson has had a unique combination of policy positions in four Cabinet departments in the U.S. government as well as numerous diplomatic assignments in and about the Middle East.
