SUMMARY:Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland and Cuyahoga County are at the near center of the nation-wide crisis (Cuyahoga County alone has seen a 1\,000 percent increase in opioid deaths since 2007). In this Multi-Regional Project\, visitors from Afghanistan\, Cyprus\, Morocco\, Seychelles\, China\, and Russia will visit Cleveland to address the current opioid abuse crisis\, health promotion strategies\, demand reduction strategies\, and current trends in understanding addiction. Given how serious the issue is\, a wide-range of resource and partnership initiatives have emerged in the last few years to address addiction\, treatment\, and prevention. The Cuyahoga County Opiate Task Force\, made up of over 50 multi-sector partners\, is a great example of collaboration to educate the community on this issue. Another resource to highlight is Project DAWN\, a state initiative implemented at a local hospital to provide naloxone that has been credited with saving 300+ lives. \nInternational Visitor Leadership (IVLP) Program \nEach year\, over 300 professionals from around the world visit Northeast Ohio through IVLP. SUMMARY:Entrepreneurship as the Engine of Prosperity and Stability
DESCRIPTION:Visitors from 16 countries throughout Africa will travel to Northeast Ohio to observe the effectiveness of the business sector in creating jobs and alleviating global poverty. This project will examine the regulatory systems that allow entrepreneurs to flourish while identifying policies that may discourage such enterprises. Visitors will get to explore various business models\, support mechanisms\, and innovations such as micro-lending and micro-level marketing. SUMMARY:Bridges to the World Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bridges to the World is a series of interactive workshops that examine the key elements of global education and explore a multitude of resources for educators to foster global competence in their classrooms. The semester-long professional development program will train a cohort of educators in middle and high school classrooms to become confident instructors in global education. The initiative will offer educational resources and professional development opportunities for teachers in the realms of world affairs\, geopolitical issues and U.S. foreign policy. \nParticipating teachers will be required to attend three workshops to evaluate and reflect upon implementation of resources in the classroom. The workshops lead a cohort of participants through the four stages of global competency\, using the Asia Society framework. Participants will learn how to engage students in current events and international issues through investigating the world\, recognizing the perspectives of others\, communicating their ideas and taking action.

But that transformation doesn’t come without consequences\, as outlined in in Jim Krane’s new book Energy Kingdoms: Oil and Political Survival in the Persian Gulf. \nIn the book\, Krane expounds on how the Middle East has also emerged as a leading voice in energy use innovation\, and how it is utilizing its influence with regards to conversations on climate change. DESCRIPTION:The United States’ leadership has drastically changed over the past two years: the United States has abandoned the Paris Climate Accords\, the Iran nuclear deal\, the North American Free Trade Agreement\, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership to name a few major changes. President Trump’s first two years in office have sent the message that America is no longer interested in supporting our traditional allies and friends. Instead\, U.S. policy is to put America first whenever possible. \nJames Lindsay\, the Senior Vice President and Director of Studies at the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)\, will join the Cleveland Council on World Affairs for a Foreign Policy Forum to discuss America’s role in today’s world. Trump announced he was pulling 2\,000 American troops out of Syria and 7\,000 American troops out of Afghanistan\, signaling his belief that the war on terror has been won. These decisions were not supported by many military and intelligence officials – Secretary of Defense James Mattis publicly resigned in response – who believe continued military involvement is necessary to ensure stability. \nSo\, what happens now? SUMMARY:Bridges to the World Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bridges to the World is a series of interactive workshops that examine the key elements of global education and explore a multitude of resources for educators to foster global competence in their classrooms. The semester-long professional development program will train a cohort of educators in middle and high school classrooms to become confident instructors in global education. The initiative will offer educational resources and professional development opportunities for teachers in the realms of world affairs\, geopolitical issues and U.S. foreign policy. \nParticipating teachers will be required to attend three workshops to evaluate and reflect upon implementation of resources in the classroom. The workshops lead a cohort of participants through the four stages of global competency\, using the Asia Society framework. Participants will learn how to engage students in current events and international issues through investigating the world\, recognizing the perspectives of others\, communicating their ideas and taking action.

DESCRIPTION:CCWA’s Academic WorldQuest Competition \nAcademic WorldQuest is a national competition in which teams of high school students test their knowledge of international affairs\, U.S. foreign policy\, and current events. Teams compete over 10 rounds of questioning for the grand prize of representing Northern Ohio in the National Competition held in Washington\, D.C. in April. \nOur local Northern Ohio competition was held on Thursday\, January 17\, 2019. Throughout their program in Northeast Ohio\, visitors will meet with the Cleveland Public Library\, Cuyahoga County Public Library\, The Center for Arts-Inspired Learning\, MC2STEM High School\, Think[Box]\, and the City of Solon Community Center. \nInternational Visitor Leadership (IVLP) Program \nEach year\, over 300 professionals from around the world visit Northeast Ohio through IVLP. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State\, these visitors have been identified by U.S. embassies as emerging leaders in their fields. Over 50 Nobel Laureates and 335 current or former Chiefs of State or Heads of Government are alumni of this program. \nBy connecting with foreign leaders we strengthen Northeast Ohio’s commercial\, cultural\, and educational ties with the rest of the world.
