SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Foreign Threats and the 2020 Election
DESCRIPTION:The challenges facing contemporary democracies are unprecedented. The rise of foreign interference in the spread of disinformation\, the fragility of cybersecurity\, and questions of electoral integrity have recently forced us to reevaluate our conception of national security. And that was before the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe. \nWith less than 100 days to the 2020 general election – and with the coronavirus pandemic showing no signs of abating – there are renewed concerns about the safety\, integrity\, and security of American electoral processes and structures. Intelligence officials continue to warn that foreign actors – especially Russia\, China and Iran – are trying to disrupt this year’s voting with disinformation and attempted cyberattacks. \nChief among their concerns are the fragility of online state voter registration systems\, which were among the main targets of Russian hackers in 2016. In addition\, many states are experimenting with expanded online voting and mail-in ballots. These options\, while likely effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19\, rely\, to some extent\, on technologies that can be targeted by hackers or nation states to manipulate election results. \nHow is America preparing to handle potential foreign interference in the 2020 election? Are these threats different than 2016? What is the government doing to safeguard elections? \n\nPanelists\n\nZack Cooper\, Ph.D.\nSenior Fellow\, The German Marshall Fund of the United States\, and Co-Director\, Alliance for Securing Democracy\nGirma Paris\, Ph.D.\nVisiting Assistant Professor\, Department of Political Science\, Case Western Reserve University\nLaura Rosenberger\nSenior Fellow\, The German Marshall Fund of the United States\, and Director\, Alliance for Securing Democracy\n\n\n\nModerator\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: COVID-19 and Women's Leadership Around the World
DESCRIPTION:In October 2020\, the world will mark the 20th anniversary of the landmark Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women\, Peace and Security\, which addressed the importance of women’s political participation for sustainable peace\, among other issues. \nThis anniversary comes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to upend lives around the globe. For women\, these affects are especially acute. In countries both industrialized and developed\, women are facing multiple threats – physical\, emotional\, sexual\, and psychological – and even worse in situations of conflict and humanitarian crises; and job loss and economic instability. Complicating matters is the fact that women often have little to no advocates when it comes to making crucial decisions that affect their lives − women make up only 10 percent of national leaders. \nWhat is the situation for women globally? And how has it impacted women’s political leadership? What will women’s political demands be worldwide as we cautiously move into a “new normal?” Will anything change? \n\n\nPanelists\n\nSharon Bhagwan-Rolls\nBoard Co-Chair\, Global Fund for Women\nAnna Powles\, Ph.D.\nSenior Lecturer\, Centre for Defense and Security Studies\, Massey University\nGina Torry\nDirector\, International Center for Dialogue and Peacebuilding\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nMonday October 26\, 2020 from 6:00-7:00 PM \nThe world is watching closely as the U.S. presidential election approaches. Analysts have stated that this election is historic and unprecedented for a number of reasons\, and we are now in the final stretch of the 2020 presidential campaign. Joe Biden and Donald Trump clash on almost every issue\, including the role of the United States in the world. From our changing relationship with China\, to the role of the U.S. in counterterrorism\, and U.S. leadership worldwide\, there are many decisions at stake in this realm. What role will foreign policy play in the 2020 election? \nJoin CCWA for an exciting Foreign Policy Forum on the election and United States foreign policy with Ambassador Nicholas Burns from the Harvard Kennedy School.  Ambassador Nicholas Burns is the Roy and Barbara Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School. SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: The Next President’s Foreign Policy Inbox
DESCRIPTION:Regardless of which candidate prevails on November 3\, the next President of the United States will inherit a complicated international landscape and mounting global problems. While this has been true for nearly every modern presidential election\, what makes this election different is that Joe Biden and Donald J. Trump vastly disagree on almost every foreign policy issue: the World Health Organization (WHO) and the international response to the coronavirus pandemic; our changing relationships with China\, Iran and North Korea; the Paris Climate Accord; the role of the U.S. in counterterrorism; and what American leadership in the world looks like. \nIf Joe Biden is elected President\, many believe he will inherit a country that has abdicated its global leadership role and lost its claim to moral authority. While Biden pledges to restore relationships\, experts believe it won’t be easy. If President Donald J. Trump is re-elected\, many believe his “America First” philosophy will further alienate the United States from its allies\, stoke more intense conflict with adversaries\, and reward and empower authoritarian leaders around the world. Which philosophy will prevail? \nJoin us as local experts discuss the future of American foreign policy under the next President. \nPanelists\nAndrew Z. Katz\, Ph.D.\nClass of 1954 Richard G. Lugar Professor in Public Policy; Chair of Political Science\, Denison University \nKathryn Lavelle\, Ph.D.\nEllen and Dixon Long Professor in World Affairs\, Case Western Reserve University \nPete Moore\, Ph.D.\nM.A. Hanna Professor of Political Science\, Case Western Reserve University \nModerator\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN \nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m. Have a question? SUMMARY:Crisis in the U.S.-China Relationship: What's next for the two countries?
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nWednesday November 18\, 2020 from 6:00-7:15 PM \nMany foreign policy experts are watching closely as tensions continue to mount between the United States and China. As of now\, Beijing is increasingly seen as a competitor and an economic rival to the United States. Although numerous variables and trends in the U.S.-China relationship are long term\, the November U.S. presidential election adds an element of uncertainty to the relationship\, as the election outcome could alter the growing divide between the two nations. Are tensions between the two nations at a breaking point?  \nJoin CCWA for a Foreign Policy Forum in light of the changing dynamic between the U.S. and China on November 17\, 2020\, as we host expert Susan Thornton. Susan Thornton is a retired senior U.S. diplomat with almost 30 years of experience with the U.S. State Department in Eurasia and East Asia. She is currently a senior fellow and research scholar at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale University Law School; director of the Forum on Asia-Pacific Security at the National Committee on American Foreign Policy; and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. \n \n  \nUntil July 2018\, Thornton was acting assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State and led East Asia policymaking amid crises with North Korea\, escalating trade tensions with China\, and the changing international environment. In previous State Department roles\, she worked on U.S. policy toward China\, Korea\, and the former Soviet Union and served in leadership positions at U.S. embassies in Central Asia\, Russia\, the Caucasus\, and China. \nThornton received her master’s in international relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and her bachelor’s from Bowdoin College in economics and Russian. She serves on several non-profit boards and speaks Mandarin and Russian. \n  \n  \nRegistration:  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. SUMMARY:Global Economic Outlook 2021
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nThis Forum is the annual Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum on International Business. \nThe global economy continues to slowly climb out of recession following the COVID-19 lockdowns that impacted the entire world in the spring of 2020. Even though cases of COVID-19 continue to rise\, the global economy has proven its resilience in small ways\, as growth has rebounded in some emerging markets faster than was projected. Despite this positive indication\, the World Bank and International Monetary Foundation warn of setbacks and major consequences in 2021 and beyond. For instance\, global poverty is expected to rise for the first time in over two decades\, international trade continues to decline\, inequality is projected to worsen\, and living standards are falling. With all of this in mind\, it is likely that the overall ascent and recovery back to pre-pandemic economic activity will be a long one. What might the new year bring for the global economy? How will the world rebound post-COVID-19? \nJoin us for our first Foreign Policy Forum of 2021 with Nicolas Véron\, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Véron is also a senior fellow at Bruegel\, a Brussels-based economic policy think tank he helped co-found in 2002. He is also host of the Peterson Institute’s Financial Statements virtual event series. A French citizen and graduate of Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris\, he has held various positions in the public and private sectors\, including as corporate adviser to France’s labor minister (1997–2000)\, as chief financial officer of the publicly listed internet company MultiMania / Lycos France (2000–2002)\, and as an independent financial services consultant. \nThis Forum is the annual Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum on International Business. Established in 2020\, the annual Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum is an endowed speaker program that supports the organization of an annual public lecture program that will address in alternate years a topic related to the Republic of India and one related to International Business. The Cleveland Council on World  Affairs makes this annual program open to the public as part of its Foreign Policy Forum series. \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required. \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS FORUM HAS CLOSED. THE PROGRAM IS FULL.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Coups and the Fragility of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:On January 6\, 2021\, supporters of President Trump violently stormed the Capitol after attending a rally on the National Mall where Trump defended his belief that the election had been “stolen” from him. Five people died. Many saw it as inevitable\, a cumulation of four years of President Trump and his administration testing the invisible boundaries of American democracy. Others called it a failed coup attempt. Regardless\, the violence shocked the world\, with many global leaders publicly expressing their anger and sadness while maintaining their belief in the strength of American democratic institutions. \nBut coups are not uncommon worldwide. According to the Pew Research Center\, more than 75 countries (including a few that no longer exist – Czechoslovakia\, North and South Yemen\, and South Vietnam) have experienced at least one successful coup since World War II. Overall\, while military and self-coups are on the decline\, they still occur in the modern era: in 2013\, Egyptian General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi stormed the presidential palace riding his tank\, toppling the first democratically civilian-elected President\, Mohammed Morsi. In 2017\, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was removed as president and party leader of ZANU-PF. \nIn the United States\, Americans have struggled to define and comprehend what happened. Was it a riot? An uprising? A coup? And\, perhaps more importantly\, could it happen again? It’s unfamiliar territory for a nation committed to a peaceful transfer of power. \nJoin us as experts discuss the what it takes to overthrow a democracy\, and offer some perspectives on what happened in the United States on January 6. \n\nPanelists\n\nNaunihal Singh\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\, U.S. Naval War College\, and author\, “Seizing Power: The Strategic Logic of Military Coups”\nEmily Berman\, J.D.\, LL.M.\nAssociate Professor\, University of Houston Law Center\n\n\n\nModerator\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:The United States and Iran: What Will the Next Four Years Hold?
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nMultiple issues surround the U.S.-Iran relationship and now face the Biden Administration. A primary policy consideration  is Iran’s nuclear program and the possibility of restoring the 2015 nuclear agreement. How can the Biden Administration work to prevent a Iranian nuclear weapons program and increase security in the Middle East through relations with Iran? How will the Biden Administration choose to engage with Iranian counterparts? Outside of bilateral and nuclear issues\, multilateral diplomacy will likely be a central focus for how the United States will engage with Iran and others in the Middle East. What might U.S. multilateral diplomacy look like in a region filled with challenging actors? \nOn February 23\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs will host Paul Pillar and Kelsey Davenport for a dynamic conversation about the challenges facing the Biden Administration’s policy towards Iran and the Middle East. \nPaul Pillar is a Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Center for Security Studies in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a Fellow of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He had a 28 year career in the U.S. intelligence community and most recently served as National Intelligence Officer for the Near East and South Asia. Earlier he served in analytical and managerial positions\, including as chief of analytic units at the CIA covering portions of the Near East\, the Persian Gulf\, and South Asia. \nKelsey Davenport is the Director for Nonproliferation Policy at the Arms Control Association\, where she focuses on the nuclear and missile programs in Iran\, North Korea\, India\, and Pakistan. She also reports on developments in these areas for Arms Control Today and runs the Arms Control Association’s project assessing the effectiveness of multilateral voluntary initiatives that contribute to nonproliferation efforts. Prior to joining the Arms Control Association\, she worked at a think tank in Jerusalem researching Middle East security issues. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. The podcast recording will be posted in our podcasts section after the event.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Russia\, Putin\, and the Pro-Democracy Movement
DESCRIPTION:Alexei Navalny\, an anti-corruption investigator and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin’s most prominent critic\, is determined to challenge the authoritarian leader and change Russia’s political system. He was arrested on January 17 upon returning from Germany\, where he spent five months recovering from a nerve-agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin. Putin has denied being involved. Navalny is currently jailed for violating the terms of a 2014 conviction\, a conviction Navalny maintains is politically motivated. \nNavalny’s arrest and jailing has prompted the biggest dissent the Russian government has faced in years\, and the peaceful protests that have occurred across Russia have been met with heavy police presence and thousands of civilian arrests. The situation has also heightened tensions between Russia and the European Union (EU) − Moscow expelled three European diplomats for allegedly attending demonstrations in support of Navalny and EU officials are considering proposed sanctions in response to Russia’s refusal to engage on human rights. \nJust how strong is Navalny’s opposition movement? How will the Kremlin respond to the most significant rebuke of its power? And how does the outcome affect Russia’s standing in the European Union − and the world? \n\nSpeakers\n\nAndrew Barnes\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor\, Department of Political Science\, Kent State University\nRegina Smyth\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\, Department of Political Science\, Indiana University Bloomington\n\n\n\nModerator\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m. Have a question? SUMMARY:Why Is It So Hard To Talk About Climate Change?
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nOur community partners for this forum are The Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve University and CWRU Center for International Affairs. \nClimate change is one area where politics\, economics\, and science come together to create an all-encompassing challenge that must be met by leaders worldwide. Unfortunately\, it is clear that the causes\, effects\, and policies needed to counter climate change are a point of contention\, as everything regarding climate change has become politically divisive. Global issues require global responses and there is no agreement on whether or how the international community can coordinate approaches to the many challenges involving energy\, environment\, and fiscal responsibilities. Molly Williamson\, a retired Foreign Service Officer and current scholar with the Middle East Institute\, will explore key factors confounding policy makers and political leaders\, both foreign and domestic. \nMolly Williamson is a retired Foreign Service Officer\, who served six different presidents\, and achieved the rank of Career Minister. Williamson speaks extensively on energy\, economic and demographic factors affecting foreign policy formulation\, US-Middle East relations\, especially regional unrest\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, Iran and nuclear challenges\, and the interagency process. \nShe is a scholar with the Middle East Institute and the National Council on US-Arab Relations\, a consultant\, and frequent guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University\, the Defense Institute of Security Cooperation\, and the National Joint Staff College. Williamson has had a unique combination of policy positions in four Cabinet departments in the U.S. government as well as numerous diplomatic assignments in and about the Middle East. Williamson was the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Energy with global responsibilities at the nexus of foreign policy and energy policy. \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required.\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Why Rust Belts Matter Around the World
DESCRIPTION:In America and other Western democracies\, older industrial communities are in a painful process of economic transition. These geographic regions were once economic powerhouses\, but have experienced a decline in manufacturing\, and a subsequent decline in local economies\, property taxes\, education\, and other community assets. Research has shown that when election season rolls around\, residents of these geographic regions are also increasingly likely to latch onto populist candidates like Donald Trump or Marine Le Pen. \nNeopopulism thrives in rust belt communities across the globe – communities where residents are responsive to the messages of nationalism\, nativism\, retreat from the international community\, and nostalgia for days gone by offered up by right-wing populists. Yet\, evidence also suggests that when these communities have economic hope\, the appeal of populism wanes. Economic condition and the appeal of populism are inseparable\, and if the United States and Europe do not address the feelings of alienation and desperation produced in these communities\, they will continue to face the rise of angry electorates willing to give voice to chaos-causing\, antidemocratic candidates. \nJoin us as national experts discuss the transatlantic effort to diminish the appeal of populism\, revitalize rust belt economies\, and restore democracy. \n\nSpeakers\n\nJeffrey Anderson\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\, Georgetown University; Former Director of the BMW Center for German and European Studies\nJohn Austin\nDirector\, Michigan Economic Center; Nonresident Senior Fellow\, Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Brookings Institution\n\n\n\nModerator\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m. Have a question? SUMMARY:Cleveland International Film Festival: To the Street
DESCRIPTION:CCWA is proud to be a community partner again at this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival. Our partner film\, To the Street (A La Calle)\, will be be available for streaming on April 8-20\, 2021 during the virtual CIFF. Use the code CCWA to receive a discount when purchasing tickets. \nAbout the film: \nThe crisis unfolding in Venezuela has been making headlines for years. As violence erupts in the streets\, people without food\, water\, or electricity have been fleeing the country in droves. Unsustainable economic practices compounded by Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian reign has created the perfect storm for a national catastrophe\, and has inspired enormous demonstrations throughout the country\, uniting people of all walks of life against the corrupt institutions that hold them down. But standing up has come at a price. Opposition leader Leopoldo López was sentenced to 14 years in prison after “inciting violence” by encouraging people to protest. Thousands more have been incarcerated\, injured\, and even killed for speaking out against the myth of Maduro’s free and fair elections. While the rising opposition party led by López\, alongside Juan Guaidó\, the president of the Venezuela’s National Assembly\, has gained international support\, Maduro has refused to step down\, failing to acknowledge the gravity of the humanitarian crisis. Capturing the profound passion and unwavering resistance of the Venezuelan people\, A LA CALLE documents this incredible uprising through the eyes of ordinary citizens as they struggle to reclaim their democracy. \nFor more information about our partner film and the film festival\, and to purchase tickets\, visit CIFF online. SUMMARY:Women and War: The Women Who Took on ISIS - and Won
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas.\nOur community partners for this forum are CWRU Center for International Affairs and the CWRU Flora Stone Mather Center for Women. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring this Foreign Policy Forum\, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon will discuss her new book\, the instant New York Times best seller The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion\, Courage\, and Justice. The Daughters of Kobani tells the story of an unlikely fight in northeastern Syria in 2014\, when an all-female militia faced off against ISIS. The Daughters of Kobani introduces the women of this all-female militia fighting on the front lines\, playing a central role as America’s on-the-ground partner in the territorial defeat of ISIS. In the process\, they worked to make women’s equality a reality. These female fighters were intent on defeating the Islamic State and on changing women’s lives in the Middle East and beyond.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWomen’s contributions to matters of war and peace\, foreign policy\, national security\, and even combat on battlefields have often been overlooked. With each passing year\, there is a growing recognition of these contributions\, as women leaders shape policy around the world. In recent conflicts and wars\, women activists have bravely led protests to call for change or end violence. A few have joined peace negotiation processes. Women have also taken to the battlefield to protect their families\, nations\, and cultures. Join us as we take a look at the changing norms around women on the battlefield and their role in foreign policy.Ms. Tzemach Lemmon’s previous book\, Ashley’s War\, tells the story of another group of female fighters hoping to change the narrative about women and war: American soldiers who served as part of U.S. special operations. Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is an Adjunct Senior Fellow for Women and Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required.\n\n\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: 10 Years of War in Syria
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2011\, protestors took to the streets in Syria to show solidarity with the growing pro-democracy movements in Libya\, Egypt\, and Tunisia. Across the region\, these protests sparked a domino effect of citizens taking to the streets to demand democratic reforms and greater freedoms; on a larger scale\, this period became known as the Arab Spring. In Syria\, however\, the initial uprisings were followed by a government and military crackdown\, successive resignations from Syrian government officials\, human rights abuses\, and an exodus of thousands of Syrian residents. This shaped the start of the Syrian Civil War. \nTen years after the first protests began\, the brutal violence has subsided\, but peace remains elusive. An estimated 593\,000 people have died\, more than 11 million currently need humanitarian assistance\, approximately six million people are displaced within Syria\, and more than million Syrian refugees have relocated across the globe. Outside of the humanitarian disaster and need for assistance\, the Syrian conflict has numerous domestic actors competing for government control as well as larger geopolitical implications\, as the U.S.\, Iran\, Russia\, and Turkey all have a hand at the table. \nJoin us for a conversation on the state of affairs in Syria\, 10 years since those first uprisings\, and what the ongoing instability there means for the region. \n\nSpeaker\n\nRobert S. Ford\nSenior Fellow\, Middle East Institute; Former United States Ambassador to Syria\n\n\n\nModerator\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m. Have a question? SUMMARY:Why U.S. Humanitarian Work Should Matter To Americans
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nOur community partner for this forum is The American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio.  \nThis past year more than ever\, we have learned that not all disasters are limited by national borders. Whether COVID-19\, climate change\, or political unrest\, when international disasters occur around the world it impacts Americans here at home. The U.S. Government is the world’s leading donor of humanitarian assistance\, reaching millions of people around the globe with life-saving aid every year. Its work is a demonstration of American values\, strengthens U.S. national security\, and helps the American economy. With all of this in mind\, how will the Biden Administration focus on aligning its humanitarian work with its domestic priorities? \n \n  \nThe Cleveland Council on World Affairs is proud to host a Foreign Policy Forum with Neilesh Shelat from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for a conversation on U.S. humanitarian policy. Mr. Shelat is Deputy Assistant to the Administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance\, which is the U.S. government lead organization for international disaster response. \n  \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required.\n\n\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:The Future of U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas.\nOur community partners for this forum are the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies (NOCMES) and the CWRU Center for International Affairs.\n\n\nPresident Biden’s Administration inherited a host of challenges and opportunities in the Middle East. It has become clear over the last two decades that neither American diplomacy nor a presence on the ground has been able to transform the region. From the ongoing war in Syria\, to proxy wars across the Middle East\, and power competition amongst regional rivals\, there are no easy answers for U.S. engagement and policy-making in the region. Without reshaping our own diplomatic efforts\, it is increasingly unlikely that the United States will be able to push an agenda in the region. What’s the best path forward for U.S. engagement in the Middle East? \n  \n \n  \n  \nJoin us for a special lunch-time Foreign Policy Forum with Beirut-based writer\, journalist\, and Emmy Award Winner\, Kim Ghattas. Kim Ghattas is currently a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a contributing writer for The Atlantic. Ghattas was an international affairs correspondent with BBC for twenty years. She is the author of a New York Times notable book of 2020\, Black Wave: Saudi Arabia\, Iran and the Forty Year Rivalry that Unraveled Culture Religion and Collective Memory in the Middle East.  \n  \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required. \nTo register\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:Afghanistan's Lessons for a More Sustainable Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:After two decades of U.S. engagement in Afghanistan\, America’s longest war is ending with a dramatically unplanned evacuation of civilian personnel\, U.S. citizens\, and some vulnerable Afghans ahead of the September 11 deadline set for the formal withdrawal of U.S. forces. The rapid take-over of Kabul by the Taliban has prompted debate about the future of Afghanistan\, the impact of U.S. policy decisions\, and the moral responsibility that America bears following its decades of intervention. What lessons can the United States learn from our prolonged engagement? Join us for this Foreign Policy Forum with Adam Weinstein\, from the Quincy Institute\, who will offer his thoughts on such lessons and discuss prospects for Afghanistan and for the United States’ future engagement in the region. \nAdam Weinstein is a Research Fellow with the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He previously worked for KPMG’s international trade practice and assisted multinational clients in navigating Asia’s changing trade landscape\, managing sanctions risk\, and utilizing free trade agreements. Adam’s analysis on Afghanistan and Pakistan has been featured in Foreign Policy\, War on the Rocks\, Lawfare\, and The National Interest. Adam served as a U.S. Marine and deployed to Afghanistan in 2012 as part of a detachment to the 2nd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company where he served in Uruzgan Province in support of Australia’s 2nd Commando Regiment. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students $5. \nLocation: The Union Club\, 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nParking: Parking at the Union Club is $10 for valet service.
