SUMMARY:European Security Under a Shifting World Order
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members. \nCCFR is honored to host Rose Gottemoeller\, William J. Perry Lecturer at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies\, to discuss the future of European security. Drawing upon her experiences as the Deputy Secretary General of NATO from 2016 to 2019\, Ms. Gottemoeller will analyze how European nations are being forced to reassess their roles in regard to their national and regional security. She will examine the ways in which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to inform and influence Europe’s relationship with the U.S.\, and the ramifications of a more isolationist U.S. policy towards the continent. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Making Sense of U.S. Policy in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. Walk-ins are not permitted. Please email jconnell@ccwa.org with questions. \nWelcome to the 2025-2026 Foreign Policy Forum season! To kick off the season\, CCWA is honored to host Brian Katulis\, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute\, to discuss the critically important\, yet often complicated\, U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. \nMr. Katulis will draw upon decades of experience living and working in the Middle East to analyze current and past administrations’ policies in the Middle East. The United States under President Trump has outlined a number of foreign policy priorities for the Middle East\, including deterrence of Iran\, countering terrorist networks\, and strengthening economic and technological cooperation with partners in the region. With the Israel-Gaza conflict nearing the two-year mark\, Syria working to rebuild\, and Iran continuing its nuclear program\, the region remains as tumultuous as ever. Does this administration have the capability to affect positive change? What does this administration’s version of peace look like? \nBrian Katulis is a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute\, specializing in U.S. foreign policy and national security. He hosts the MEI podcast series Taking the Edge Off the Middle East and authors the column “Making Sense: A Weekly Take on U.S. Foreign Policy.” As a foreign policy strategist and senior fellow\, Mr. Katulis has produced influential studies that have shaped key regional policy debates and provided expert testimony to congressional committees on his findings. Prior to MEI\, he was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress\, where he built the center’s Middle East program. His career also includes significant experience at the National Security Council\, the U.S. Department of State\, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

SUMMARY:Constructing Peace: How Diplomats Change the World
DESCRIPTION:This event has reached capacity. Please email jconnell@ccwa.org to be placed on the wait list. \nIn a time when turmoil and conflict dominate the headlines\, it can be difficult to maintain belief in the often slow-moving process of diplomacy. Yet\, diplomacy remains a critically important method for facing and overcoming the challenges facing the United States and the world. Diplomatic endeavors have a long history of successes\, from the opening of China and the agreement to end the Vietnam War\, to the Abraham Accords. How can today’s seemingly insurmountable struggles be softened or solved by negotiation? What lessons from the past can we apply to the present? \nCCWA is honored to host Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat to share the lessons he has learned not just from studying modern diplomacy\, but actively practicing it. As author of the new book\, The Art of Diplomacy\, Ambassador Eizenstat will draw upon his wealth of experience from his distinguished career in public service\, as well as his numerous interviews with key figures in American diplomacy\, to suggest a framework for the U.S. to conduct successful negotiations. Ambassador Eizenstat will provide a 360-degree view of international negotiations at the highest level\, as he takes us behind-the-scenes of major international agreements from the Good Friday Agreement to the Kyoto Protocols and the Iranian Nuclear Accord. \nThroughout his career in public service across six presidential administrations\, Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat held a number of key senior positions\, including U.S. Ambassador to the European Union\, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade\, and Under Secretary of State for Economic\, Business and Agricultural Affairs\, among others. He served as Special Adviser on Holocaust-Era Issues to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of State John Kerry during the Obama Administration\, and held positions on the Defense Policy Board for Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. Currently\, Ambassador Eizenstat is Senior Counsel in Covington & Burling LLP’s international practice\, where he focuses on resolving international trade problems and business disputes with the U.S. and foreign governments. \nHe has written multiple books\, including Imperfect Justice (2003)\, President Carter: The White House Years (2018)\, and most recently\, The Art of Diplomacy (2024). Copies of The Art of Diplomacy will be available for purchase at the event.

SUMMARY:Examining Global Supply Chains with the Port of Cleveland
DESCRIPTION:This event is exclusively for members of CCWA. Unfortunately\, we have reached capacity for this program. Please email jconnell@ccwa.org to be placed on the wait list. \nCleveland’s economy is inextricably linked to global trade and supply chains. Cuyahoga and our surrounding counties exported more than $10 billion in goods in 2023\, while more than 800 foreign-owned companies operate in the region. Cleveland’s world-class healthcare\, manufacturing\, and technology industries rely on raw materials and components from Canada\, Mexico\, Germany\, China\, Japan\, and many more. And yet\, decades-old assumptions about how international trade works have been upended in the last five years\, first by the supply chain disruptions of the pandemic and then by the rapidly evolving trade policies of the Trump Administration. Join CCWA and the Port of Cleveland as we take a closer look at this issue and what it means for Cleveland. \nThe Port of Cleveland is on the front lines of changes in global supply chains and the impacts of tariffs. CCWA is excited to bring you a behind-the-scenes look at the operation of the port. Following a walking tour of the port facilities\, participants will join a discussion on the state of global supply chains and what this might mean for Cleveland. The roundtable format will invite all participants to join the conversation and share their perspectives and questions about this critical topic. \nCCWA’s new CEO\, Marti Flacks\, will lend her expertise as moderator of the roundtable. Before joining CCWA\, Marti served as the first Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Supply Chain Center at the U.S. Department of Commerce. She will be joined by the Port of Cleveland Chief Commercial Officer Dave Gutheil; Senior Vice President for Urban Planning & Engagement Linda Sternheimer; and Vice President of Operations and Facilities Jared Magyar.

SUMMARY:Reluctant Conquest: America's Relationship with the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information will be sent to eligible members on Thursday\, October 30. \nCCWA is honored to host Dr. Kathryn Lavelle\, Ellen and Dixon Long Professor of World Affairs at Case Western Reserve University\, to share her insights on the past\, present\, and future of America’s relationship with the Arctic region. SUMMARY:Sports Diplomacy in America's Decade of Sport
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. \nFrom the Olympics to the FIFA World Cup\, international sports competitions have long been a way for countries to display national pride and attain international recognition that they might not regularly receive. However\, sports diplomacy — the application of sports to international diplomacy — is a much newer area of development within international relations\, but one that could potentially have a wide global impact. With the United States hosting the World Cup in 2026\, the Olympics in 2028\, and the Winter Olympics in 2034\, the U.S. is entering a decade in which it will be front and center on the stage of international sports. How might sports diplomacy help the U.S. make the most of this unique opportunity? \nTo better understand the impact of sports diplomacy on both a global and local level\, CCWA’s CEO Marti Flacks will lead a conversation with Travis Murphy\, CEO of Jetr Global Sports\, and Mike Mulhall\, Senior VP at the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. They will cover a range of topics\, from the role that sports can play in bilateral relations between two countries\, to the involvement of private corporations and teams\, to how Cleveland can leverage sports diplomacy for its benefit. \nTravis Murphy is a recognized global leader in sports diplomacy\, immigration\, and government affairs. As the founder and CEO of Jetr Global Sports + Entertainment\, he brings more than two decades of experience in international policy and fostering cross-cultural connections. Travis has held pivotal roles as a sports executive\, U.S. diplomat\, a consular officer in West Africa and South America\, as well as chief of staff in Congress. Most recently\, he helped lead international government affairs for the NBA. His expertise was instrumental in securing Brittany Griner’s release from unlawful detention in Russia in 2022. \nMike Mulhall is the Senior Vice President\, Business Development & Revenue for Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In this role\, he provides leadership to the organization’s operations group\, partner alliances and bid process for future events. Prior to his current role\, Mulhall served as Vice President of Partnerships for Destination Cleveland where he helped to manage relationships with nearly 700 organizations which are working to grow the tourism industry in Northeast Ohio. Mr. Mulhall has also served as part of the leadership for the sales team at both the Cleveland Guardians and Six Flags. He lives in Cleveland with his wife\, Deb\, and has four adult children.

SUMMARY:The Global Economic and Risk Outlook for 2026
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed\, but please email jconnell@ccwa.org if you’d like to attend. \nThe Cleveland Council on World Affairs is honored to host Michael Weidokal for the John A. Hellman Foreign Policy Forum. Please note that this will be held at the Parma-Snow Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library! \nThe global economy has been battered by a series of crises in recent years\, and 2026 appears likely to be another year of economic and geopolitical instability. The frequency of major world events and the ever-increasing pace of technological change has made it difficult to accurately assess the global economic situation. This uncertainty creates challenges for individuals and businesses around the globe\, including here in Cleveland. To help make sense of the evolving economic environment\, CCWA is joined by Michael Weidokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). \nMr. Weidokal will provide his thoughts on how the global economy is shaping up for 2026\, risk factors to be aware of\, and how you can prepare for the changes that lie in store for the coming year. He will outline some of the near- and long-term opportunities for economic growth\, as well as the leading threats to this growth. He will take a close look at how demographic changes will impact the labor force and the role technology may play in solving or deepening that issue. Crucially\, all of his analysis is filtered through the lens of geopolitics. As Mr. Weidokal will demonstrate\, it is impossible to separate the global economy from broader world affairs. \nMichael Weidokal’s ability to combine international economics\, geopolitics\, and history allows him to have a unique perspective on global developments. His areas of expertise include the fields of international economic competitiveness\, global market selection\, and geopolitical risk assessment. Over the course of his career\, Mr. Weidokal has worked with a number of major professional services firms and multinational organizations\, helping them to develop models of maximizing the benefits while minimizing the risks of doing business in international markets. In 2003\, he founded International Strategic Analysis (ISA)\, and his firm quickly became the leading provider of country intelligence\, economic forecasting\, and international market studies for a range of clients around the world\, including Amazon\, Lockheed Martin\, Ford\, Siemens\, and FedEx.

SUMMARY:Tariffs and Trade Agreements: Navigating unprecedented change
DESCRIPTION:Join CCWA for a series of webinars focused on current developments in international trade and economics. Designed for a business audience\, but open to all\, webinars will cover the relevant legal and regulatory context\, recent and ongoing developments\, risks and opportunities\, and why this topic is relevant to the Cleveland community. \nMany of the assumptions that the world has held about how international trade works have been upended in recent years. The increased use of tariffs has caused many businesses and industries to reevaluate their supply chains and ways of doing business. Cleveland’s economy is inextricably linked to global trade. How can Cleveland businesses set themselves up for success in this new age of trade? \nThis program is the first session of a four-part webinar series. Participants can register for each session individually\, or purchase the entire series below. \n\nSession 2\, February 26\, 2026: Renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement: The future of trade with our neighbors\nSession 3\, March 26\, 2026 Forced Labor in Global Supply Chains: A rapidly evolving regulatory environment\nSession 4\, April 23\, 2026: Critical Minerals and Chinese Export Controls: Impacts on U.S. business

SUMMARY:The U.S. G20 Presidency: Narrowed Focus Amid Sharp Divisions
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Monday\, January 12. \nCCWA is honored to host Caitlin Welsh\, director for global economic engagement at the National Security Council from 2018-2020\, to share her insights on this year’s U.S. G20 presidency and what it means for the future of multilateralism. The return of the G20 presidency to the United States follows a period of expansion within the G20\, both in terms of membership as well as agenda items. Thus far\, the U.S. seems intent to redirect the G20 away from its recent development-centered agenda and towards an agenda anchored in economic growth and deregulation. Such a shift raises fundamental questions about the G20’s purpose\, legitimacy\, and effectiveness at a moment when multilateralism itself is increasingly under strain. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. To join\, renew\, or upgrade your membership\, please click here.

SUMMARY:What Comes Next for Venezuela?
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed. Walk-ins are welcome\, but please email jconnell@ccwa.org to provide advance notice. \nThe Cleveland Council on World Affairs is honored to host Ambassador William Brownfield for the Frederick Emeny Foreign Policy Forum. Please note that this event will be held at the Parma-Snow Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. \nBarely two months ago\, in a move many now see as foreshadowing U.S. action in Iran\, the U.S. military launched an operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and bring him to the United States to stand trial. Many people in Venezuela and around the world were grateful to see the demise of Maduro’s brutal and corrupt regime\, but the U.S. move left open critical questions about the future of governance in Venezuela\, as well as what the U.S. action means for our global posture towards our adversaries\, including Cuba and elsewhere. \nCCWA is honored to host Ambassador William (Bill) Brownfield to discuss these timely issues. Ambassador Brownfield is a former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela and former Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement\, and will provide his unique perspective and analysis on the future of Venezuela\, U.S. involvement there\, and how these events may shape U.S. relations across the Western Hemisphere. Are these events in Venezuela a one-off occurrence\, or has the U.S. set a new standard for engagement in the region? \n\nPlease note that this event will be held at the Parma-Snow Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. After the program\, we encourage you to continue the conversation with CCWA’s Carter E. Strang Young Professionals Advisory Committee down the street at Parma Tavern. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:The Use of Force and the Future of International Law
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Friday\, March 13. \nThe first few months of 2026 have seen the executive branch of the United States test the limits of its authority to use force against international actors – from the U.S. maritime bombing campaign against suspected drug boats\, to the military incursion into Venezuela\, to significant military action against Iran. Each has raised serious questions about compliance with U.S. domestic law and\, increasingly\, international law as well. \nCCWA is honored to host Tess Bridgeman\, Co-Editor in Chief of Just Security. Her presentation will help us understand the legal framework that governs how and when a President can use military force overseas\, historical precedents\, and the role of Congress.

SUMMARY:Forced Labor in Global Supply Chains: A rapidly evolving regulatory environment
\nSome of Northeast Ohio’s most important industries\, including automotive\, aerospace\, and industrial and manufacturing materials\, have been targeted by the U.S. government for enforcement of trade laws banning the import of goods made with forced labor. More than $3.7 billion in goods have been stopped at the U.S. border since the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act went into effect in 2022\, and the Trump Administration has emphasized its intent to continue enforcement. What do Cleveland-area companies need to know about this and similar laws\, and where is this effort headed? \nThis program is the third session of a four-part webinar series. See below for details on the other webinars! \n\nSession 1\, January 22\, 2026: Tariffs and Trade Agreements: Navigating unprecedented change\nSession 2\, February 26\, 2026: Renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement: The future of trade with our neighbors\nSession 4\, April 23\, 2026: Critical Minerals and Chinese Export Controls: Impacts on U.S. business

SUMMARY:Inside the White House Situation Room
DESCRIPTION:Registration has closed for this event. Please contact jconnell@ccwa.org with questions. \nIn 1961\, after the Bay of Pigs invasion\, President John F. Kennedy requested a secure facility to feed intelligence information directly into the White House. Thus\, the White House Situation Room was created. For decades now\, the Situation Room has been the venue where our nation’s leaders gather during critically important moments in our history. In 2003\, it’s where George W. Bush gave the fateful order to begin the Iraq War. And in 2011\, Barack Obama sat transfixed\, watching in real time as Navy Seals executed a plan to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. \nCCWA is honored to host Marc Gustafson\, former senior director of the White House Situation Room\, to share his insights into the space where some of the nation’s most impactful decisions are made. Marc will walk through the various functions of the Situation Room and the detailed protocols that govern their operations. He’ll also seek to clarify the fact from fiction in Hollywood portrayals of the Situation Room\, particularly in Netflix’s recent movie “A House of Dynamite.” There aren’t many opportunities to get an inside look at one of the world’s most secure locations — don’t miss out! \nMarc Gustafson is the senior director of analysis at Eurasia Group. He brings over two decades of national security and intelligence experience to the role. Prior to joining Eurasia Group\, Marc served in multiple high-level roles at the White House under presidents Barack Obama\, Donald Trump\, and Joe Biden. He was the director of the White House Situation Room\, the White House chief of intelligence\, and the senior director for Africa. Marc also spent 15 years at the CIA as a senior manager and analyst.
