SUMMARY:Denuclearizing the Peninsula? Strategic Outlook for the U.S. and South Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Republic of Korea has been a strategic U.S. military and economic ally since the 1950s. With regional tensions with China at an all-time high\, a new Korean President since May\, and global trade experiencing massive disruption\, what does the future of the strategic U.S.-Korea relationship look like? And how might they jointly\, or multilaterally\, continue to thwart the threats from ongoing missile tests and nuclear program development from the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK)? \nTo examine this question\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA) will host a delegation including representatives from the Korea Economic Institute\, the Korean Embassy and the U.S. Department of State. Ms. Hannah Cha \, a Cleveland native who currently serves as the DPRK Unit Chief in the Office of Korea-Mongolia Affairs\, will represent the State Department. She previously served as a Political Officer overseeing the DPRK portfolio at the U.S. Embassy Seoul\, following a one-year diplomatic exchange at the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in their Bureau of Public Diplomacy. Dr. Clint Work\, Director of Academic Affairs\, will represent the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI). \nCCWA has been selected for the “Engage America: Future of Korea 2022” project\, a partnership between the World Affairs Councils of America and the Korea Economic Institute (KEI). KEI’s Future of Korea is an outreach program that strengthens interest in U.S.-Korea relations with community members\, business leaders\, and students outside of the DC metropolitan area. KEI hosts a series annually with leading local World Affairs Councils throughout the United States. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students admitted free with support from the Dr. and Mrs. Wael and Sawssan Khoury Students’ Fund. \nLocation: Residence Inn by Marriott-   527 Prospect Ave E\, Cleveland\, OH 44115.  \nParking: The Residence Inn valet parking stand is located at 527 Prospect Ave E. Additional parking options include the Arena Stadium Parking located at 522 Prospect Ave E. or the Euclid Prospect Gateway Garage located at 708 Prospect Ave E.  \nRegistration: Register is now closed. Please contact Amy Moniot with any questions at amoniot@ccwa.org or call 216 255 9006. \n  \n  \nForeign Policy Forum COVID-19 Guidelines \nIn light of the ongoing evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the health and safety of our members\, speakers\, and staff remain a priority for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. \nWe ask that all Foreign Policy Forum attendees agree to maintain vigilance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by: \n\n\n\nRefraining from attending Foreign Policy Forum events if you:\n\nHave had recent contact with an infected person\nAre experiencing symptoms or feeling unwell\n\n\nMaintaining a vaccination and booster schedule appropriate for your own risk level and health implications.\nContinuing to follow local health authorities’ guidelines in an evolving environment.\nAgreeing to comply with requests\, such as masking\, if necessary\, made by CCWA staff to prevent the spread of COVID-19.\n\n\n\n  \nQuestions?
