SUMMARY:Art and International Cooperation: The Bridges that Cleveland Helps Build

SUMMARY:CIFF: Navalny
DESCRIPTION:CCWA is proud to be a community partner again at this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF). Our timely partner film\, Navalny\, follows Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist after his attempted poisoning in 2020. \nCIFF will run March 30 – April 7\, 2022. The screening of Navalny will be on April 5\, 2022 at 5PM. \nUse discount code “CCWA” to get $1 off any CIFF film ticket. \nClick here for more information and for tickets. \n  \n“In August 2020\, a plane traveling from Siberia to Moscow made an emergency landing. One of its passengers\, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny\, was deathly ill. Taken to a local Siberian hospital and eventually evacuated to Berlin\, doctors confirmed that he had been poisoned with Novichok\, a nerve agent implicated in attacks on other opponents of the Russian government. President Vladimir Putin immediately cast doubt on the findings and denied any involvement. While recovering\, Navalny and his team—already with a large social media following in tow—partnered with the data investigative journalism outlet Bellingcat as well as other international news organizations to investigate his attempted assassination and find proof of the Kremlin’s involvement. In NAVALNY\, filmmaker Daniel Roher reveals a courageous and controversial would-be president at the precipice of sacrificing everything in order to bring reform to his homeland.” —Sundance Film Festival

SUMMARY:CCWA Member and Citizen Diplomat Appreciation Night
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Council on World Affairs cordially invites its members and citizen diplomats to a special evening event on Tuesday\, June 14 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. We are excited to reconnect in person with our Citizen Diplomat volunteers and our members for a fun evening featuring an interactive session with intercultural training consultant\, Nicole Barile\, followed by a reception with networking and refreshments. \nIf you love to travel or meet friends from other cultures here in Cleveland\, and wish to sharpen your cultural toolkit\, Nicole Barile will offer a fun and introductory session to intercultural competency. We are excited to offer this complimentary program as a thank-you to our dedicated Citizen Diplomats and members (like you!) with an exploration into the core principles of global competency. \nThe session will give you an introduction to CCWA’s Global Competency training. Learning outcomes from the session may include: \n\n\n\nLearn how to communicate more effectively across culture\nUnderstand one’s own cultural perspective\nIdentify and gain awareness of underlying dimensions of culture\nRecognize the importance of approaching cultural interactions with an open mind\n\n\n\n\nThe session is intentionally interactive and self-reflective. SUMMARY:Can the U.S. Reset the Agenda with Latin America?
DESCRIPTION:The Summit of the Americas\, hosted in San Diego in June\, brought about tense interactions between the U.S. and our hemispheric neighbors to the south. Debate about the guestlist\, threats of boycott\, and challenges to the agenda were just a few of the reasons many felt the gathering did not accomplish as much as it could have.  Ambassador McKinley will argue that a wholesale reset of the relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the Americas is in order. With the recent elections of several leftist leaders in Latin America and increasing Chinese investment seen by these leaders as a solution to ongoing economic woes\, Ambassador McKinley will warn that the time to reframe the relationship and set the groundwork for productive cooperation moving forward is now. \nAmbassador P. Michael McKinley is Senior Adviser in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A four-time ambassador to Peru\, Colombia\, Afghanistan and Brazil\, his 37-year career as a diplomat covered issues in development\, trade\, and peace negotiations. He also oversaw refugee resettlement programs for populations in Africa\, Europe\, and Latin America from 2001-2004. Ambassador McKinley is the recipient of numerous honors and awards\, including State Department Distinguished Honor Awards and Presidential Performance Awards. \n  \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students admitted free with support from the Dr. and Mrs. Wael and Sawssan Khoury Students’ Fund. \nLocation: The Union Club\, 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nParking: Parking at the Union Club is $10 for valet service. Additional parking options include other lots in the downtown area and street parking\, if parking restrictions are not in place. Car services\, such as Uber and Lyft\, are always an option. CCWA also encourages walking\, biking\, or public transportation\, including the RTA. \nRegistration: Registration for this program is now closed. Please contact Amy Moniot with any questions at amoniot@ccwa.org or call 216 255 9006. \nForeign Policy Forum COVID-19 Guidelines \nIn light of the ongoing evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the health and safety of our members\, speakers\, and staff remain a priority for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. \nWe ask that all Foreign Policy Forum attendees agree to maintain vigilance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by: \n\n\n\nRefraining from attending Foreign Policy Forum events if you:\n\nHave had recent contact with an infected person\nAre experiencing symptoms or feeling unwell\n\n\nMaintaining a vaccination and booster schedule appropriate for your own risk level and health implications.\nContinuing to follow local health authorities’ guidelines in an evolving environment.\nAgreeing to comply with requests\, such as masking\, if necessary\, made by CCWA staff to prevent the spread of COVID-19.\n\n\n\n  \nQuestions?
