SUMMARY:International Women of Courage: Honoring the 2023 Awardees
DESCRIPTION:The International Women of Courage Award given by the U.S. Secretary of State recognizes extraordinary women from around the world who have demonstrated exceptional courage\, strength\, and leadership in advocating for peace\, justice\, human rights\, gender equity\, and the empowerment of women and girls\, in all their diversity\, often at great personal risk and sacrifice. Since the inception of the International Women of Courage Award in March 2007\, the U.S. Department of State has recognized more than 170 women from over 80 countries. \nOn March 14\, 2023\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs will welcome two of the 2023 honorees to share their stories and help us mark International Women’s Day by recognizing the incredible work that they are leading in their respective countries. \nProfessor Danièle Darlan\, the former President of the Central African Republic’s Constitutional Court\, has earned the title of an International Woman of Courage for her defense of her nation’s constitution\, her heroism in safeguarding judicial independence\, and her refusal to be influenced by threats or political pressure. \nSenator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi has spent most of her professional life advancing and promoting human rights\, selflessly advocating for vulnerable populations and using her platforms to shed light on injustices in Malaysian society.  Ras Adiba also became a national Paralympic sharpshooter and earned a spot in the Malaysian Book of Records for ‘wheeling’ 420km in 13 days from Johor Bharu to Putrajaya in her wheelchair. \nPlease note that the event will be partially in French with English interpretation. \nThis event is sold out.

DESCRIPTION:CCWA is looking for internationally minded individuals and families to host international exchange participants for dinner on March 11. \nParticipants are in Cleveland on an exchange project called NGO Management. Participants are from ten different countries from around the world. This project is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Interantional Visitors Leadership Program. \nDinner Hosting FAQ \nNo need for an elaborate multi-course meal. Dinner does not need to be expensive and can be done as easily as you’d like. A potluck or a catered meal are also possibilities. Schedule pending\, a weekend brunch or lunch may also be arranged.\nThe more the merrier. You’re welcome to invite family members or friends to help welcome your international guests.\nWho’s coming to dinner? Groups range from 2 – 5 visitors—an interpreter may be included\, too. Hosts will pick up their Fulbright scholar on Friday\, February 10 at Lakewood Park’s Woman’s Club Pavilion\, spend a free day exploring the city and engaging in fun cultural activities\, and drop their Fulbright scholar back off at Lakewood Park on Sunday\, February 12. \nThe program will begin with a welcome reception at Lakewood Park at 4:00 pm on February 10.

SUMMARY:Spotlight on the Environment: Debriefing COP27 and the Global Water Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Climate Conference (COP27 ) held in Sharm el-Sheik in November 2022 resulted in a landmark agreement to develop a dedicated fund to assist developing countries in responding to loss and damage that may result from climate change. A delegation of Cleveland leaders traveled to Egypt to participate in the conference and witness the process. They will share their experience and observations about global climate change negotiations. \nMichael Jeans is the CEO of Growth Opportunity Partners. SUMMARY:Denuclearizing the Peninsula? Strategic Outlook for the U.S. and South Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Republic of Korea has been a strategic U.S. military and economic ally since the 1950s. With regional tensions with China at an all-time high\, a new Korean President since May\, and global trade experiencing massive disruption\, what does the future of the strategic U.S.-Korea relationship look like? And how might they jointly\, or multilaterally\, continue to thwart the threats from ongoing missile tests and nuclear program development from the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK)? \nTo examine this question\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA) will host a delegation including representatives from the Korea Economic Institute\, the Korean Embassy and the U.S. Department of State. Ms. Hannah Cha \, a Cleveland native who currently serves as the DPRK Unit Chief in the Office of Korea-Mongolia Affairs\, will represent the State Department. She previously served as a Political Officer overseeing the DPRK portfolio at the U.S. Embassy Seoul\, following a one-year diplomatic exchange at the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in their Bureau of Public Diplomacy. Dr. Clint Work\, Director of Academic Affairs\, will represent the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI). \nCCWA has been selected for the “Engage America: Future of Korea 2022” project\, a partnership between the World Affairs Councils of America and the Korea Economic Institute (KEI). KEI’s Future of Korea is an outreach program that strengthens interest in U.S.-Korea relations with community members\, business leaders\, and students outside of the DC metropolitan area. SUMMARY:American Leadership Youth Exchange for Senegal
DESCRIPTION:CCWA will host a group of 12 students (ages 17-19) from Senegal through the American Leadership Exchange Program (ALEX) sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the American Councils for International Exchange. The program will focus on leadership development and environmentalism and will take place October 29th – November 6th\, 2022. We are seeking Home Hosts who can welcome 1-2 students into their home from October 29th – November 6th.  \nFor interested hosts: Each student must have their own bed\, though they may share a room with a student of the same gender. (Air mattresses are not permitted.) We ask that students be provided breakfast foods and that they be included in family meals in the evening. During the day on weekdays\, students will be engaged in educational programming\, and transportation and lunches will be provided by CCWA. Students have weekend days and most evenings free to spend time with their host families. SUMMARY:Prosperity and Peace: A Hopeful Future for the Abraham Accords
DESCRIPTION:Significant moves in both diplomatic and economic relationships are already bearing fruit after the historic signing in September 2020 of the Abraham Accords to jointly normalize relations between Israel\, Bahrain\, and the United Arab Emirates. In the two years since the first signing\, four additional Arab countries have signed on to the Accords. Moreover\, other players in the region have gained the confidence needed to strengthen regional trade agreements and commercial ties. SUMMARY:Can the U.S. Reset the Agenda with Latin America?
DESCRIPTION:The Summit of the Americas\, hosted in San Diego in June\, brought about tense interactions between the U.S. and our hemispheric neighbors to the south. Debate about the guestlist\, threats of boycott\, and challenges to the agenda were just a few of the reasons many felt the gathering did not accomplish as much as it could have.  Ambassador McKinley will argue that a wholesale reset of the relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the Americas is in order. With the recent elections of several leftist leaders in Latin America and increasing Chinese investment seen by these leaders as a solution to ongoing economic woes\, Ambassador McKinley will warn that the time to reframe the relationship and set the groundwork for productive cooperation moving forward is now. \nAmbassador P. Michael McKinley is Senior Adviser in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A four-time ambassador to Peru\, Colombia\, Afghanistan and Brazil\, his 37-year career as a diplomat covered issues in development\, trade\, and peace negotiations. He also oversaw refugee resettlement programs for populations in Africa\, Europe\, and Latin America from 2001-2004. DESCRIPTION:CCWA is looking for internationally-minded host families for Fulbright scholars from around the world on July 29-31\, 2022. \nCCWA will be partnering with Ohio University to host 35 Fulbright graduate students in Cleveland for the weekend. All Fulbright scholars speak English and will be studying in graduate programs across the U.S. They are here in Ohio for an orientation program and will come to Cleveland to spend a fun “weekend in the city” with host families. Hosts will pick up their Fulbright scholar on Friday\, July 29 at Lakewood Park\, spend a free day exploring the city and engaging in fun cultural activities\, and drop their Fulbright scholar back off at Lakewood Park on Sunday\, July 31. \nThe program will begin with a Welcome Picnic at Lakewood Park at 6:00 pm on July 29. Drawing comparisons between economic dislocation in places like the Rust Belt\, manufacturing regions of England and the former Soviet Union\, Dr. Hill exposes the fragility of democracy as a global political system. After her years serving as senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council\, she has returned to Brookings as a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at the Center on the United States and Europe. \nFiona Hill is a senior fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings. From 2017 to 2019\, she recently served as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for European and Russian affairs on the National Security Council. From 2006 to 2009\, she served as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia at The National Intelligence Council. She is co-author of Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin (2015.) SUMMARY:Art and International Cooperation: The Bridges that Cleveland Helps Build
DESCRIPTION:In a world where conflicts most often make our news headlines\, the connections that art can create across countries and cultures are perhaps more vital than ever. These connections are multifaceted: sometimes art creates space for unique international partnerships to flourish\, sometimes music transcends conflict in ways than no diplomatic effort could\, and sometimes art simply brings people together across cultures. Artistic connectivity is very rich in large global cities. International connections through art are also happening here in Cleveland in ways that expand our horizons and enrich our cultural experience. DESCRIPTION:Despite continued recovery from the pandemic in 2021\, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank forecast that output in 2022 will be far below pre-pandemic projections. Moreover\, the recovery has been very uneven\, largely reflecting strong rebounds in certain major economies. Whereas in many developing economies\, poverty rates have risen\, and debt levels are high. As a result\, the global outlook remains subject to significant downside risks\, including the possibility of additional COVID-19 surges and financial stress due to debt burdens. \nJoin us for our first Foreign Policy Forum of 2022 with Michael Wiedokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). ISA provides country intelligence\, economic forecasting and international market studies for many of the world’s leading companies. SUMMARY:Jóvenes en Acción - Mexico Youth Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Council on World Affairs is seeking internationally-minded families to virtually welcome one or two high-achieving high school students from Mexico! Students will engage in programming focused on Mayan and English language learning\, tech education\, financial literacy\, and empowering tomorrow’s leaders. \nThe students are participating in the Jóvenes en Acción (“Youth in Action”) exchange program that provides high school students from Mexico to engage with resources in the United States to build leadership\, communication\, English language\, and community engagement skills. Participants engage in synchronous and asynchronous workshops\, online activities\, meetings with community leaders\, and site visits. Participants are developing service projects they will plan to implement in their home communities. This program is a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State\, the Mexican government\, and the private sector. \nThe virtual home stay component will help familiarize students with culture and family life in the Cleveland area.  CCWA is looking for virtual host families who would like to welcome one or two students during two or three self-directed virtual interactions between October 13 – November 7\, 2021. Exact meeting dates and times are flexible and based on you and your student’s availability. There is a priority for families with at least one member of high school age. DESCRIPTION:After two decades of U.S. engagement in Afghanistan\, America’s longest war is ending with a dramatically unplanned evacuation of civilian personnel\, U.S. citizens\, and some vulnerable Afghans ahead of the September 11 deadline set for the formal withdrawal of U.S. forces. The rapid take-over of Kabul by the Taliban has prompted debate about the future of Afghanistan\, the impact of U.S. policy decisions\, and the moral responsibility that America bears following its decades of intervention. What lessons can the United States learn from our prolonged engagement? Join us for this Foreign Policy Forum with Adam Weinstein\, from the Quincy Institute\, who will offer his thoughts on such lessons and discuss prospects for Afghanistan and for the United States’ future engagement in the region. \nAdam Weinstein is a Research Fellow with the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He previously worked for KPMG’s international trade practice and assisted multinational clients in navigating Asia’s changing trade landscape\, managing sanctions risk\, and utilizing free trade agreements. Join us virtually for a conversation about Chancellor Merkel’s legacy\, the outlook for the elections and the likely implications for Germany of this historical leadership transition with Stefan Kornelius\, Foreign Editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung and author of a biography of Angela Merkel. The event will be moderated by Steve Sokol\, President of the American Council on Germany. \nThis program is a partnership between CCWA\, the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA)\, Atlantik-Brücke\, and the American Council on Germany; it is part of WACA’s Wunderbar Together 2021 Engage America Series on “Germany’s Elections and the Future of Transatlantic Relations.” Wunderbar Together is a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by the Goethe-Institut. \nStefan Kornelius has been Foreign Editor of the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung since 2000. In his reporting career\, he has covered Germany’s Christian Democratic Party (CDU)\, the chancellorship of Helmut Kohl\, and defense issues in Europe. From 1996 to 1999\, he served as the paper’s Washington correspondent. His biography of German Chancellor Angela Merkel\, entitled Angela Merkel\, the Chancellor and her World\, has been translated into 13 languages. \nSteven E. Sokol is the President of the American Council on Germany (ACG). Previously\, he served as President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh from July 2010 until April 2015. Prior to that\, he was the Vice President and Director of Programs at the ACG for seven years.
