SUMMARY:The 30-Year War: Conflict in Africa's Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is typically exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests\, but for one time only\, all CCWA members are welcome to attend! \nSince 1996\, multiple waves of conflict have washed over the eastern areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo\, destabilizing the region and leading to the deaths of approximately 6 million people. While local ethnic tensions remain a flashpoint for violence\, the abundance of natural resources and grave human rights violations have globalized this conflict. To protect its mineral mines\, China has supported the Congolese government in the fight against rebel groups. Despite the need for regional stability amidst a staggering number of internally displaced people and millions more who suffer from food insecurity\, the role of international security forces has remained inconsistent and controversial. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is honored to host Mvemba Phezo Dizolele\, senior fellow and director of the Africa Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, to discuss the prolonged conflict at the heart of Africa’s Great Lakes region\, the forces shaping it\, and the road ahead. \nAre you a CCWA member interested in attending? Please email Jacob Connell at jconnell@ccwa.org. Diplomat and Ambassador members may register as normal via the link emailed directly to them. Registration will close at 5:00pm on Thursday\, May 29. \nPlease note that due to unforeseen complications with the Mr. Dizolele’s schedule\, this program has been rescheduled to June 4\, 2025.

SUMMARY:The Intersection of AI and National Security
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nThe United States faces a rapidly evolving geopolitical and security landscape that demands a refocusing of the U.S. defense agenda. The rise of artificial intelligence and advanced cyber technologies has greatly changed geopolitical calculations\, particularly in regard to competition with China. The ability to harness artificial intelligence is critically important for protecting U.S. interests at home and abroad. How has the emergence of artificial intelligence altered the nature of threats to national security? How must the U.S. military and defense industry adapt and modernize to meet these threats? \nCCFR is honored to host Melanie Sisson\, senior fellow in the Strobe Talbott Center for Security\, Strategy\, and Technology at The Brookings Institution\, to discuss the growing importance of artificial intelligence and other advanced technology\, specifically as it relates to technological competition between the U.S. and China. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Critical Minerals: How They Shape U.S. Policy
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nGeopolitical tension and conflict have driven the evolution of critical minerals policies in the U.S. for nearly a century. Today\, building resilient supply chains for critical minerals is one of the few issues that receives significant bipartisan support. Policymakers face the immense task of fortifying supplies of everything from lithium and graphite for advanced batteries to tungsten and rare earth elements for the next generation of military technologies. What are the policy decisions that can help the U.S. safeguard its critical minerals supply chains? Is it possible to secure these supply chains without ignoring or disrupting other aspects of U.S. foreign policy? \nCCFR is honored to host Gracelin Baskaran\, director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, to discuss the growing importance of critical minerals\, their supply chains\, and how they are influencing the future of U.S. foreign policy. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:(Re)Organized Crime in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nOrganized\, transnational crime has become arguably the most important security threat to democratic governance in Latin America. As corruption and violence spread\, citizens become more and more willing to accept a tough-on-crime authoritarian leader. While some Latin American democracies have effectively contained threats from the military\, insurgents\, and oligopolists\, there has yet to be a case of a state truly defeating organized crime. What are the unique challenges that organized crime presents\, and why do these democracies lack a blueprint for effectively combating it? \nCCFR is honored to host Will Freeman\, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, to discuss the evolving nature of organized crime in Latin America\, the challenges of combating it\, and the integral role of the United States. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Lessons from the Edge: Ukraine in Crisis | A Luncheon Event
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on the events that led to her removal as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine in 2019\, Marie “Masha” Yovanovitch has a stark but hopeful story to tell of the dedication of foreign service officers and her own career. Moving up through the ranks of the State Department\, Yovanovitch leveraged her intelligence and work ethic to arrive at the post of Ambassador to Ukraine in 2016. Her endeavors to encourage democracy\, support anti-corruption efforts\, and advance U.S. interests and values in Ukraine no doubt left a lasting impression that continues to inform the policies of a country now under direct military attack. Please join us for a special luncheon and book signing event with the ambassador. \nBooks will be available at the event for purchase through a partnership with Visible Voice Books. Please consider pre-ordering your book as 15% of proceeds from pre-sales will be donated to Cleveland Council on World Affairs. To order your book in advance\, please click here.  \n—

DESCRIPTION:The Republic of Korea has been a strategic U.S. military and economic ally since the 1950s. With regional tensions with China at an all-time high\, a new Korean President since May\, and global trade experiencing massive disruption\, what does the future of the strategic U.S.-Korea relationship look like? And how might they jointly\, or multilaterally\, continue to thwart the threats from ongoing missile tests and nuclear program development from the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK)? \nTo examine this question\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA) will host a delegation including representatives from the Korea Economic Institute\, the Korean Embassy and the U.S. Department of State. Ms. Hannah Cha \, a Cleveland native who currently serves as the DPRK Unit Chief in the Office of Korea-Mongolia Affairs\, will represent the State Department. She previously served as a Political Officer overseeing the DPRK portfolio at the U.S. Embassy Seoul\, following a one-year diplomatic exchange at the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in their Bureau of Public Diplomacy. Dr. Clint Work\, Director of Academic Affairs\, will represent the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI). \nCCWA has been selected for the “Engage America: Future of Korea 2022” project\, a partnership between the World Affairs Councils of America and the Korea Economic Institute (KEI). KEI’s Future of Korea is an outreach program that strengthens interest in U.S.-Korea relations with community members\, business leaders\, and students outside of the DC metropolitan area. SUMMARY:Can the U.S. Reset the Agenda with Latin America?
DESCRIPTION:The Summit of the Americas\, hosted in San Diego in June\, brought about tense interactions between the U.S. and our hemispheric neighbors to the south. Debate about the guestlist\, threats of boycott\, and challenges to the agenda were just a few of the reasons many felt the gathering did not accomplish as much as it could have.  Ambassador McKinley will argue that a wholesale reset of the relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the Americas is in order. With the recent elections of several leftist leaders in Latin America and increasing Chinese investment seen by these leaders as a solution to ongoing economic woes\, Ambassador McKinley will warn that the time to reframe the relationship and set the groundwork for productive cooperation moving forward is now. \nAmbassador P. Michael McKinley is Senior Adviser in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A four-time ambassador to Peru\, Colombia\, Afghanistan and Brazil\, his 37-year career as a diplomat covered issues in development\, trade\, and peace negotiations. He also oversaw refugee resettlement programs for populations in Africa\, Europe\, and Latin America from 2001-2004. Ambassador McKinley is the recipient of numerous honors and awards\, including State Department Distinguished Honor Awards and Presidential Performance Awards. \n  \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students admitted free with support from the Dr. and Mrs. Wael and Sawssan Khoury Students’ Fund. \nLocation: The Union Club\, 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nParking: Parking at the Union Club is $10 for valet service. SUMMARY:The 2022 Global Economic Outlook
DESCRIPTION:Despite continued recovery from the pandemic in 2021\, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank forecast that output in 2022 will be far below pre-pandemic projections. Moreover\, the recovery has been very uneven\, largely reflecting strong rebounds in certain major economies. Whereas in many developing economies\, poverty rates have risen\, and debt levels are high. As a result\, the global outlook remains subject to significant downside risks\, including the possibility of additional COVID-19 surges and financial stress due to debt burdens. \nJoin us for our first Foreign Policy Forum of 2022 with Michael Wiedokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). ISA provides country intelligence\, economic forecasting and international market studies for many of the world’s leading companies. SUMMARY:Afghanistan's Lessons for a More Sustainable Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:After two decades of U.S. engagement in Afghanistan\, America’s longest war is ending with a dramatically unplanned evacuation of civilian personnel\, U.S. citizens\, and some vulnerable Afghans ahead of the September 11 deadline set for the formal withdrawal of U.S. forces. The rapid take-over of Kabul by the Taliban has prompted debate about the future of Afghanistan\, the impact of U.S. policy decisions\, and the moral responsibility that America bears following its decades of intervention. What lessons can the United States learn from our prolonged engagement? Join us for this Foreign Policy Forum with Adam Weinstein\, from the Quincy Institute\, who will offer his thoughts on such lessons and discuss prospects for Afghanistan and for the United States’ future engagement in the region. \nAdam Weinstein is a Research Fellow with the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He previously worked for KPMG’s international trade practice and assisted multinational clients in navigating Asia’s changing trade landscape\, managing sanctions risk\, and utilizing free trade agreements. Adam’s analysis on Afghanistan and Pakistan has been featured in Foreign Policy\, War on the Rocks\, Lawfare\, and The National Interest. Adam served as a U.S. Marine and deployed to Afghanistan in 2012 as part of a detachment to the 2nd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company where he served in Uruzgan Province in support of Australia’s 2nd Commando Regiment. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students $5. \nLocation: The Union Club\, 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nParking: Parking at the Union Club is $10 for valet service. SUMMARY:Germany after Angela Merkel: Her Legacy and the Leadership Transition
DESCRIPTION:On September 26\, Germans will vote in federal elections that will determine the composition of the lower house of the federal parliament\, the Bundestag. The new majority in the Bundestag – most likely a coalition of three parties – will elect the next German Chancellor\, marking the end of 16 years of leadership by Chancellor Angela Merkel. Join us virtually for a conversation about Chancellor Merkel’s legacy\, the outlook for the elections and the likely implications for Germany of this historical leadership transition with Stefan Kornelius\, Foreign Editor at the Süddeutsche Zeitung and author of a biography of Angela Merkel. The event will be moderated by Steve Sokol\, President of the American Council on Germany. \nThis program is a partnership between CCWA\, the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA)\, Atlantik-Brücke\, and the American Council on Germany; it is part of WACA’s Wunderbar Together 2021 Engage America Series on “Germany’s Elections and the Future of Transatlantic Relations.” Wunderbar Together is a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and implemented by the Goethe-Institut. \nStefan Kornelius has been Foreign Editor of the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung since 2000. In his reporting career\, he has covered Germany’s Christian Democratic Party (CDU)\, the chancellorship of Helmut Kohl\, and defense issues in Europe. From 1996 to 1999\, he served as the paper’s Washington correspondent. His biography of German Chancellor Angela Merkel\, entitled Angela Merkel\, the Chancellor and her World\, has been translated into 13 languages. \nSteven E. Sokol is the President of the American Council on Germany (ACG). Previously\, he served as President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh from July 2010 until April 2015. Prior to that\, he was the Vice President and Director of Programs at the ACG for seven years. SUMMARY:The Future of U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas.\nOur community partners for this forum are the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle Eastern Studies (NOCMES) and the CWRU Center for International Affairs.\n\n\nPresident Biden’s Administration inherited a host of challenges and opportunities in the Middle East. It has become clear over the last two decades that neither American diplomacy nor a presence on the ground has been able to transform the region. From the ongoing war in Syria\, to proxy wars across the Middle East\, and power competition amongst regional rivals\, there are no easy answers for U.S. engagement and policy-making in the region. Without reshaping our own diplomatic efforts\, it is increasingly unlikely that the United States will be able to push an agenda in the region. What’s the best path forward for U.S. engagement in the Middle East? \n  \n \n  \n  \nJoin us for a special lunch-time Foreign Policy Forum with Beirut-based writer\, journalist\, and Emmy Award Winner\, Kim Ghattas. Kim Ghattas is currently a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a contributing writer for The Atlantic. Ghattas was an international affairs correspondent with BBC for twenty years. She is the author of a New York Times notable book of 2020\, Black Wave: Saudi Arabia\, Iran and the Forty Year Rivalry that Unraveled Culture Religion and Collective Memory in the Middle East.  \n  \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required. \nTo register\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:Why U.S. Humanitarian Work Should Matter To Americans
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nOur community partner for this forum is The American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio.  \nThis past year more than ever\, we have learned that not all disasters are limited by national borders. Whether COVID-19\, climate change\, or political unrest\, when international disasters occur around the world it impacts Americans here at home. The U.S. Government is the world’s leading donor of humanitarian assistance\, reaching millions of people around the globe with life-saving aid every year. Its work is a demonstration of American values\, strengthens U.S. national security\, and helps the American economy. With all of this in mind\, how will the Biden Administration focus on aligning its humanitarian work with its domestic priorities? \n \n  \nThe Cleveland Council on World Affairs is proud to host a Foreign Policy Forum with Neilesh Shelat from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for a conversation on U.S. humanitarian policy. Mr. Shelat is Deputy Assistant to the Administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance\, which is the U.S. government lead organization for international disaster response. \n  \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required.\n\n\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Women and War: The Women Who Took on ISIS - and Won
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas.\nOur community partners for this forum are CWRU Center for International Affairs and the CWRU Flora Stone Mather Center for Women. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring this Foreign Policy Forum\, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon will discuss her new book\, the instant New York Times best seller The Daughters of Kobani: A Story of Rebellion\, Courage\, and Justice. The Daughters of Kobani tells the story of an unlikely fight in northeastern Syria in 2014\, when an all-female militia faced off against ISIS. The Daughters of Kobani introduces the women of this all-female militia fighting on the front lines\, playing a central role as America’s on-the-ground partner in the territorial defeat of ISIS. In the process\, they worked to make women’s equality a reality. These female fighters were intent on defeating the Islamic State and on changing women’s lives in the Middle East and beyond.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWomen’s contributions to matters of war and peace\, foreign policy\, national security\, and even combat on battlefields have often been overlooked. With each passing year\, there is a growing recognition of these contributions\, as women leaders shape policy around the world. In recent conflicts and wars\, women activists have bravely led protests to call for change or end violence. A few have joined peace negotiation processes. Women have also taken to the battlefield to protect their families\, nations\, and cultures. Join us as we take a look at the changing norms around women on the battlefield and their role in foreign policy.Ms. Tzemach Lemmon’s previous book\, Ashley’s War\, tells the story of another group of female fighters hoping to change the narrative about women and war: American soldiers who served as part of U.S. special operations. Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is an Adjunct Senior Fellow for Women and Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required.\n\n\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Why Is It So Hard To Talk About Climate Change?
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nOur community partners for this forum are The Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve University and CWRU Center for International Affairs. \nClimate change is one area where politics\, economics\, and science come together to create an all-encompassing challenge that must be met by leaders worldwide. Unfortunately\, it is clear that the causes\, effects\, and policies needed to counter climate change are a point of contention\, as everything regarding climate change has become politically divisive. Global issues require global responses and there is no agreement on whether or how the international community can coordinate approaches to the many challenges involving energy\, environment\, and fiscal responsibilities. Molly Williamson\, a retired Foreign Service Officer and current scholar with the Middle East Institute\, will explore key factors confounding policy makers and political leaders\, both foreign and domestic. \nMolly Williamson is a retired Foreign Service Officer\, who served six different presidents\, and achieved the rank of Career Minister. Williamson speaks extensively on energy\, economic and demographic factors affecting foreign policy formulation\, US-Middle East relations\, especially regional unrest\, the Israel-Palestine conflict\, Iran and nuclear challenges\, and the interagency process. \nShe is a scholar with the Middle East Institute and the National Council on US-Arab Relations\, a consultant\, and frequent guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University\, the Defense Institute of Security Cooperation\, and the National Joint Staff College. Williamson has had a unique combination of policy positions in four Cabinet departments in the U.S. government as well as numerous diplomatic assignments in and about the Middle East. Williamson was the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Energy with global responsibilities at the nexus of foreign policy and energy policy. \n  \n  \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required.\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:The United States and Iran: What Will the Next Four Years Hold?
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nMultiple issues surround the U.S.-Iran relationship and now face the Biden Administration. A primary policy consideration  is Iran’s nuclear program and the possibility of restoring the 2015 nuclear agreement. How can the Biden Administration work to prevent a Iranian nuclear weapons program and increase security in the Middle East through relations with Iran? How will the Biden Administration choose to engage with Iranian counterparts? Outside of bilateral and nuclear issues\, multilateral diplomacy will likely be a central focus for how the United States will engage with Iran and others in the Middle East. What might U.S. multilateral diplomacy look like in a region filled with challenging actors? \nOn February 23\, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs will host Paul Pillar and Kelsey Davenport for a dynamic conversation about the challenges facing the Biden Administration’s policy towards Iran and the Middle East. \nPaul Pillar is a Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Center for Security Studies in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a Fellow of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He had a 28 year career in the U.S. intelligence community and most recently served as National Intelligence Officer for the Near East and South Asia. Earlier he served in analytical and managerial positions\, including as chief of analytic units at the CIA covering portions of the Near East\, the Persian Gulf\, and South Asia. \nKelsey Davenport is the Director for Nonproliferation Policy at the Arms Control Association\, where she focuses on the nuclear and missile programs in Iran\, North Korea\, India\, and Pakistan. She also reports on developments in these areas for Arms Control Today and runs the Arms Control Association’s project assessing the effectiveness of multilateral voluntary initiatives that contribute to nonproliferation efforts. Prior to joining the Arms Control Association\, she worked at a think tank in Jerusalem researching Middle East security issues. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. The podcast recording will be posted in our podcasts section after the event.

SUMMARY:Global Economic Outlook 2021
DESCRIPTION:The 2020-2021 Foreign Policy Forum Series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nThis Forum is the annual Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum on International Business. \nThe global economy continues to slowly climb out of recession following the COVID-19 lockdowns that impacted the entire world in the spring of 2020. Even though cases of COVID-19 continue to rise\, the global economy has proven its resilience in small ways\, as growth has rebounded in some emerging markets faster than was projected. Despite this positive indication\, the World Bank and International Monetary Foundation warn of setbacks and major consequences in 2021 and beyond. For instance\, global poverty is expected to rise for the first time in over two decades\, international trade continues to decline\, inequality is projected to worsen\, and living standards are falling. With all of this in mind\, it is likely that the overall ascent and recovery back to pre-pandemic economic activity will be a long one. What might the new year bring for the global economy? How will the world rebound post-COVID-19? \nJoin us for our first Foreign Policy Forum of 2021 with Nicolas Véron\, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Véron is also a senior fellow at Bruegel\, a Brussels-based economic policy think tank he helped co-found in 2002. He is also host of the Peterson Institute’s Financial Statements virtual event series. A French citizen and graduate of Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris\, he has held various positions in the public and private sectors\, including as corporate adviser to France’s labor minister (1997–2000)\, as chief financial officer of the publicly listed internet company MultiMania / Lycos France (2000–2002)\, and as an independent financial services consultant. \nThis Forum is the annual Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum on International Business. Established in 2020\, the annual Dr. Raj and Karen Aggarwal Forum is an endowed speaker program that supports the organization of an annual public lecture program that will address in alternate years a topic related to the Republic of India and one related to International Business. The Cleveland Council on World  Affairs makes this annual program open to the public as part of its Foreign Policy Forum series. \nThis webinar is free\, but advanced registration is required. \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS FORUM HAS CLOSED. THE PROGRAM IS FULL.
