SUMMARY:Nuclear Weapons Policy in a Hot World
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Friday\, March 13. \nAfter decades of relatively successful policies of nuclear restraint\, the world is facing new challenges amidst the erosion of important arms control agreements in an increasingly volatile global environment. The war in Ukraine reminded folks why nuclear weapons are seen as powerful deterrents\, but it also illustrated the risks of living in a world where those weapons shape decision-making. The war against Iran has demonstrated that military action\, even when intended to prevent proliferation\, can increase the incentives for a nation to produce nuclear weapons and reduce international visibility into nuclear weapons programs. These conflicts highlight the need for a broad\, balanced approach that recognizes the reality of deterrence in today’s world\, while still prioritizing diplomacy and reducing reliance on nuclear weapons. \nCCFR is honored to host Emma Belcher\, President of Ploughshares\, to help us understand the nuances of nuclear weapons policy\, the convergence of artificial intelligence and nuclear weapons\, and the practical\, tangible ways the world can reduce nuclear risk. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. To join\, renew\, or upgrade your membership\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Forced Labor in Global Supply Chains: A rapidly evolving regulatory environment
DESCRIPTION:Join CCWA for a series of webinars focused on current developments in international trade and economics. Designed for a business audience\, but open to all\, webinars will cover the relevant legal and regulatory context\, recent and ongoing developments\, risks and opportunities\, and why this topic is relevant to the Cleveland community. \nSome of Northeast Ohio’s most important industries\, including automotive\, aerospace\, and industrial and manufacturing materials\, have been targeted by the U.S. government for enforcement of trade laws banning the import of goods made with forced labor. More than $3.7 billion in goods have been stopped at the U.S. border since the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act went into effect in 2022\, and the Trump Administration has emphasized its intent to continue enforcement. What do Cleveland-area companies need to know about this and similar laws\, and where is this effort headed? \nThis program is the third session of a four-part webinar series. See below for details on the other webinars! \n\nSession 1\, January 22\, 2026: Tariffs and Trade Agreements: Navigating unprecedented change\nSession 2\, February 26\, 2026: Renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement: The future of trade with our neighbors\nSession 4\, April 23\, 2026: Critical Minerals and Chinese Export Controls: Impacts on U.S. business

SUMMARY:The Use of Force and the Future of International Law
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Friday\, March 13. \nThe first few months of 2026 have seen the executive branch of the United States test the limits of its authority to use force against international actors – from the U.S. maritime bombing campaign against suspected drug boats\, to the military incursion into Venezuela\, to significant military action against Iran. Each has raised serious questions about compliance with U.S. domestic law and\, increasingly\, international law as well. \nCCWA is honored to host Tess Bridgeman\, Co-Editor in Chief of Just Security. Her presentation will help us understand the legal framework that governs how and when a President can use military force overseas\, historical precedents\, and the role of Congress.

SUMMARY:Renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement: The future of trade with our neighbors
\nCanada is Ohio’s largest trading partner; Mexico is second. In fact\, Ohio sells more goods to Canada than to its next six largest foreign markets combined. As the parties begin mandatory negotiations on the future of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement in 2026\, what might a revised (or discontinued) USMCA mean for Northeast Ohio? \nThis program is the second session of a four-part webinar series. SUMMARY:The U.S. G20 Presidency: Narrowed Focus Amid Sharp Divisions
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information has been sent to eligible members on Monday\, January 12. \nCCWA is honored to host Caitlin Welsh\, director for global economic engagement at the National Security Council from 2018-2020\, to share her insights on this year’s U.S. G20 presidency and what it means for the future of multilateralism. The return of the G20 presidency to the United States follows a period of expansion within the G20\, both in terms of membership as well as agenda items. Thus far\, the U.S. seems intent to redirect the G20 away from its recent development-centered agenda and towards an agenda anchored in economic growth and deregulation. Such a shift raises fundamental questions about the G20’s purpose\, legitimacy\, and effectiveness at a moment when multilateralism itself is increasingly under strain.

SUMMARY:Tariffs and Trade Agreements: Navigating unprecedented change
DESCRIPTION:Join CCWA for a series of webinars focused on current developments in international trade and economics. Designed for a business audience\, but open to all\, webinars will cover the relevant legal and regulatory context\, recent and ongoing developments\, risks and opportunities\, and why this topic is relevant to the Cleveland community. \nMany of the assumptions that the world has held about how international trade works have been upended in recent years. The increased use of tariffs has caused many businesses and industries to reevaluate their supply chains and ways of doing business. Cleveland’s economy is inextricably linked to global trade. Cuyahoga and our surrounding counties exported more than $10 billion in goods in 2023\, while more than 800 foreign-owned companies operate in the region. Cleveland’s world-class healthcare\, manufacturing\, and technology industries rely on raw materials and components from Canada\, Mexico\, Germany\, China\, Japan\, and many more. How can Cleveland businesses set themselves up for success in this new age of trade? \nThis program is the first session of a four-part webinar series. Participants can register for each session individually\, or purchase the entire series below. \n\nSession 2\, February 26\, 2026: Renegotiation of the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement: The future of trade with our neighbors\nSession 3\, March 26\, 2026 Forced Labor in Global Supply Chains: A rapidly evolving regulatory environment\nSession 4\, April 23\, 2026: Critical Minerals and Chinese Export Controls: Impacts on U.S. business

SUMMARY:Reluctant Conquest: America's Relationship with the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. An email with registration information will be sent to eligible members on Thursday\, October 30. \nCCWA is honored to host Dr. Kathryn Lavelle\, Ellen and Dixon Long Professor of World Affairs at Case Western Reserve University\, to share her insights on the past\, present\, and future of America’s relationship with the Arctic region. The strategic and economic value of this vast region is on the rise\, as climate change opens up new shipping lanes and increases the potential to exploit the region’s natural resources. Meanwhile\, Russia’s military presence in the Arctic continues to expand – as does as does NATO’s\, thanks to the induction of new members Sweden and Finland. Drawing upon her research for her new book\, Reluctant Conquest: American Wealth\, Power\, and Science in the Arctic\, Dr. Lavelle will outline the long history of the U.S. role in the region\, how the past informs our present limitations and possibilities\, and why Ohioans should be paying attend to the future of Arctic engagement. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. SUMMARY:Examining Global Supply Chains with the Port of Cleveland
DESCRIPTION:This event is exclusively for members of CCWA. Unfortunately\, we have reached capacity for this program. Please email jconnell@ccwa.org to be placed on the wait list. \nCleveland’s economy is inextricably linked to global trade and supply chains. And yet\, decades-old assumptions about how international trade works have been upended in the last five years\, first by the supply chain disruptions of the pandemic and then by the rapidly evolving trade policies of the Trump Administration. Join CCWA and the Port of Cleveland as we take a closer look at this issue and what it means for Cleveland. \nThe Port of Cleveland is on the front lines of changes in global supply chains and the impacts of tariffs. CCWA is excited to bring you a behind-the-scenes look at the operation of the port. Following a walking tour of the port facilities\, participants will join a discussion on the state of global supply chains and what this might mean for Cleveland. The roundtable format will invite all participants to join the conversation and share their perspectives and questions about this critical topic. \nCCWA’s new CEO\, Marti Flacks\, will lend her expertise as moderator of the roundtable. Before joining CCWA\, Marti served as the first Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Supply Chain Center at the U.S. Department of Commerce. She will be joined by the Port of Cleveland Chief Commercial Officer Dave Gutheil; Senior Vice President for Urban Planning & Engagement Linda Sternheimer; and Vice President of Operations and Facilities Jared Magyar.

SUMMARY:The 30-Year War: Conflict in Africa's Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is typically exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests\, but for one time only\, all CCWA members are welcome to attend! \nSince 1996\, multiple waves of conflict have washed over the eastern areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo\, destabilizing the region and leading to the deaths of approximately 6 million people. While local ethnic tensions remain a flashpoint for violence\, the abundance of natural resources and grave human rights violations have globalized this conflict. To protect its mineral mines\, China has supported the Congolese government in the fight against rebel groups. Despite the need for regional stability amidst a staggering number of internally displaced people and millions more who suffer from food insecurity\, the role of international security forces has remained inconsistent and controversial. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is honored to host Mvemba Phezo Dizolele\, senior fellow and director of the Africa Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, to discuss the prolonged conflict at the heart of Africa’s Great Lakes region\, the forces shaping it\, and the road ahead. \nAre you a CCWA member interested in attending? Please email Jacob Connell at jconnell@ccwa.org. Diplomat and Ambassador members may register as normal via the link emailed directly to them. Registration will close at 5:00pm on Thursday\, May 29. \nPlease note that due to unforeseen complications with the Mr. Dizolele’s schedule\, this program has been rescheduled to June 4\, 2025.

SUMMARY:The Intersection of AI and National Security
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nThe United States faces a rapidly evolving geopolitical and security landscape that demands a refocusing of the U.S. defense agenda. The rise of artificial intelligence and advanced cyber technologies has greatly changed geopolitical calculations\, particularly in regard to competition with China. The ability to harness artificial intelligence is critically important for protecting U.S. interests at home and abroad. How has the emergence of artificial intelligence altered the nature of threats to national security? How must the U.S. military and defense industry adapt and modernize to meet these threats? \nCCFR is honored to host Melanie Sisson\, senior fellow in the Strobe Talbott Center for Security\, Strategy\, and Technology at The Brookings Institution\, to discuss the growing importance of artificial intelligence and other advanced technology\, specifically as it relates to technological competition between the U.S. and China. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Critical Minerals: How They Shape U.S. Policy
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nGeopolitical tension and conflict have driven the evolution of critical minerals policies in the U.S. for nearly a century. Today\, building resilient supply chains for critical minerals is one of the few issues that receives significant bipartisan support. Policymakers face the immense task of fortifying supplies of everything from lithium and graphite for advanced batteries to tungsten and rare earth elements for the next generation of military technologies. What are the policy decisions that can help the U.S. safeguard its critical minerals supply chains? Is it possible to secure these supply chains without ignoring or disrupting other aspects of U.S. foreign policy? \nCCFR is honored to host Gracelin Baskaran\, director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies\, to discuss the growing importance of critical minerals\, their supply chains\, and how they are influencing the future of U.S. foreign policy. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:(Re)Organized Crime in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:The Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations (CCFR) is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests. \nOrganized\, transnational crime has become arguably the most important security threat to democratic governance in Latin America. As corruption and violence spread\, citizens become more and more willing to accept a tough-on-crime authoritarian leader. While some Latin American democracies have effectively contained threats from the military\, insurgents\, and oligopolists\, there has yet to be a case of a state truly defeating organized crime. What are the unique challenges that organized crime presents\, and why do these democracies lack a blueprint for effectively combating it? \nCCFR is honored to host Will Freeman\, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations\, to discuss the evolving nature of organized crime in Latin America\, the challenges of combating it\, and the integral role of the United States. \nThe Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations is a dinner and dialogue series that provides unparalleled access to top experts and diplomats for candid discussions of today’s most pressing international issues. Participation is exclusive to Diplomat and Ambassador members and their guests.

SUMMARY:Lessons from the Edge: Ukraine in Crisis | A Luncheon Event
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on the events that led to her removal as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine in 2019\, Marie “Masha” Yovanovitch has a stark but hopeful story to tell of the dedication of foreign service officers and her own career. Moving up through the ranks of the State Department\, Yovanovitch leveraged her intelligence and work ethic to arrive at the post of Ambassador to Ukraine in 2016. Her endeavors to encourage democracy\, support anti-corruption efforts\, and advance U.S. interests and values in Ukraine no doubt left a lasting impression that continues to inform the policies of a country now under direct military attack. Please join us for a special luncheon and book signing event with the ambassador. \nBooks will be available at the event for purchase through a partnership with Visible Voice Books. Please consider pre-ordering your book as 15% of proceeds from pre-sales will be donated to Cleveland Council on World Affairs. To order your book in advance\, please click here.  \n—

SUMMARY:Denuclearizing the Peninsula? Strategic Outlook for the U.S. and South Korea
DESCRIPTION:The Republic of Korea has been a strategic U.S. military and economic ally since the 1950s. With regional tensions with China at an all-time high\, a new Korean President since May\, and global trade experiencing massive disruption\, what does the future of the strategic U.S.-Korea relationship look like? SUMMARY:Can the U.S. Reset the Agenda with Latin America?
DESCRIPTION:The Summit of the Americas\, hosted in San Diego in June\, brought about tense interactions between the U.S. and our hemispheric neighbors to the south. Debate about the guestlist\, threats of boycott\, and challenges to the agenda were just a few of the reasons many felt the gathering did not accomplish as much as it could have.  Ambassador McKinley will argue that a wholesale reset of the relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the Americas is in order. With the recent elections of several leftist leaders in Latin America and increasing Chinese investment seen by these leaders as a solution to ongoing economic woes\, Ambassador McKinley will warn that the time to reframe the relationship and set the groundwork for productive cooperation moving forward is now. \nAmbassador P. Michael McKinley is Senior Adviser in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A four-time ambassador to Peru\, Colombia\, Afghanistan and Brazil\, his 37-year career as a diplomat covered issues in development\, trade\, and peace negotiations. He also oversaw refugee resettlement programs for populations in Africa\, Europe\, and Latin America from 2001-2004. Ambassador McKinley is the recipient of numerous honors and awards\, including State Department Distinguished Honor Awards and Presidential Performance Awards. \n  \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students admitted free with support from the Dr. and Mrs. Wael and Sawssan Khoury Students’ Fund. \nLocation: The Union Club\, 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nParking: Parking at the Union Club is $10 for valet service. SUMMARY:The 2022 Global Economic Outlook
DESCRIPTION:Despite continued recovery from the pandemic in 2021\, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank forecast that output in 2022 will be far below pre-pandemic projections. Moreover\, the recovery has been very uneven\, largely reflecting strong rebounds in certain major economies. Whereas in many developing economies\, poverty rates have risen\, and debt levels are high. As a result\, the global outlook remains subject to significant downside risks\, including the possibility of additional COVID-19 surges and financial stress due to debt burdens. \nJoin us for our first Foreign Policy Forum of 2022 with Michael Wiedokal\, Founder and Executive Director of International Strategic Analysis (ISA). ISA provides country intelligence\, economic forecasting and international market studies for many of the world’s leading companies. Mr. Wiedokal will provide his thoughts on economic performance in 2021 and his forecast for the global economy in 2022. \nJanuary 2022 Update: In light of the current surge in COVID-19 cases in Cuyahoga County\, there will be no pre-forum reception (ticket price reduced accordingly). The program will start at 6:00pm.
