Trade and Finance: Latin America and the Global Economy
June 11, 2015 - June 16, 2015
Latin America and the United States are closely interlinked in terms of trade. As of August 2014, U.S. producers were exporting three times more to countries in Latin America than to China; similarly, Central America and South America purchase 50% more goods from the United States than the Chinese. Including Mexico, total trade in imports and exports with Latin America are about 20-25% of U.S. trade activity. Additionally, large amounts of foreign direct investment in the region by the United States means that Latin American and U.S. economic success is becoming increasingly interdependent within the global economy.
In June, CCWA will welcome a Latin American delegation traveling to the U.S. to learn about trade and finance. This program will examine the U.S. economic system and the domestic economic forces that influence trade policy; examine trends in the global economy and their impact on the United States and the Western Hemisphere; and present an overview of major developments in international, regional, and sub-regional trade alliances. In addition, it will explore trends and patterns in foreign investment in emerging and developed economies, with a special focus on the United States and Latin America. The project is designed for trade, finance, and investment professionals in both the public and private sectors; economists; university faculty; think tank experts; journalists and other influential voices in finance, business, economic planning and public policy.
