Towards a More Safe and Secure World: Community Engagement and Countering Extremism

April 26, 2017 - May 2, 2017

Visitors representing 12 countries will be exploring grassroots efforts to stymie violent extremism and promote tolerance and mutual understanding. By getting out into the Cleveland community and engaging with governmental, law enforcement, civil society, and faith-based organizations, visitors will gain insight into a multi-dimensional approach to addressing the underlying conditions that fuel extremism. This program will allow the visitors and their U.S. counterparts to learn from each other and create an ongoing dialogue that will bolster efforts in Cleveland and abroad to make our world more safe, secure, and tolerant.

International Visitor Leadership (IVLP) Program

Each year, over 250 professionals from around the world visit Northeast Ohio through IVLP. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, these visitors have been identified by U.S. embassies as emerging leaders in their fields. Over 50 Nobel Laureates and 335 current or former Chiefs of State or Heads of Government are alumni of this program.

By connecting with foreign leaders we strengthen Northeast Ohio’s commercial, cultural, and educational ties with the rest of the world. For more information, contact Katie Ferman, Program Officer, at or click here. To get involved as a Citizen Diplomat, click here.
