Reimagining Relations with the Middle East
March 28, 2017 @ 5:45 pm - 8:30 pm
Cleveland Committee on Foreign Relations events are for CCFR members only.
Ambassador Chas W. Freeman, Jr. is a senior fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Ambassador Freeman will join us to discuss the current state of affairs in the Middle East with a special focus on Saudi Arabia.
Longstanding American partnerships in the Middle East – with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, and Turkey – are turning to antagonism. The United States must now share power in the region with Russia, and China looms on the horizon. Meanwhile, the U.S. remains bogged down in Afghanistan and Iraq and directly or indirectly involved in wars in Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen. Iran in unreconciled. Islamist terrorism, once localized in Afghanistan, is spreading to every corner of the globe. How did this happen and what is to be done about it?
