Health Challenges: Kuwait
May 10, 2015 - May 14, 2015
With approximately 75% of the Kuwait population categorized as either overweight or obese, 25% of the population suffering from Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease and other non-communicable diseases on the rise, Kuwait’s healthcare system faces serious challenges. Despite this, healthcare in Kuwait remains primarily treatment-based, with little emphasis on the public health tenets of preventative medicine. Particularly worrisome are the alarming increases in childhood obesity, as well as the concomitant rise in non-communicable disease (NCD) rates among Kuwaiti children and adolescents.
Five visitors from Kuwait are coming to Cleveland to examine how U.S. public and private sectors are combating non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, alcoholism, smoking and drug addiction; how we raise awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyles, diet and exercise; and learn about programs at the community level to improve health and bolster local economies, such as “Let’s Move,” eat local, eat fresh movements, farmers markets, and farm-to-school programs.
