Grassroots Democracy and Citizen Participation: A Project for Venezuela

October 3, 2016 - October 6, 2016

The Cleveland Council on World Affairs will be welcoming visitors from Venezuela for a program entitled “Grassroots Democracy and Citizen Participation” in early October. This program will focus on how organizations, individuals, and candidates prepare for and execute campaigns on a grassroots level. The visitors will learn about civic engagement, outreach, and mobilization within the political process. While here, the visitors will also witness firsthand political activity surrounding the general election and the importance of Ohio as a swing state in national elections. Given the currently changing political climate in Venezuela, learning about U.S. democratic processes in national and local elections will deepen the visitors’ understanding of citizen participation in politics.

International Visitor Leadership (IVLP) Program

Each year, over 250 professionals from around the world visit Northeast Ohio through IVLP. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, these visitors have been identified by U.S. embassies as emerging leaders in their fields. Over 50 Nobel Laureates and 335 current or former Chiefs of State or Heads of Government are alumni of this program.

By connecting with foreign leaders we strengthen Northeast Ohio’s commercial, cultural, and educational ties with the rest of the world. For more information, contact Katie Ferman, Program Officer, at or click here. To get involved as a Citizen Diplomat, click here.
