Elected Kashmiri Officials (India)
August 6, 2015 - August 11, 2015
Both in current times and throughout history, India and the United States have shared an extensive cultural, strategic, military, and economic relationship. International ties are stronger than ever; in January of 2015, President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to be invited as the chief guest of India’s Republic Day celebrations. To reinforce such positive relations, this project will bring five international visitors to the United States from the Kashmir region of India to explore the functions of state and local governance in U.S. society. Meetings with student organizations, political party officials, state-level women politicians, and NGOs will provide a variety of American perspectives on critical social and political issues. In addition, participants will interact with volunteer programs and organizations involved in community-based dispute resolution initiatives.
During their time in Cleveland, visitors will learn specifically about constituent outreach, women in politics, and transparency and accountability in government. They will discuss these topics as well as examine Cleveland’s state and local governance through meetings with prominent city officials, Cleveland State University professors of law, the Cuyahoga County chapters of the Democratic and Republican Parties, and community-based volunteer organizations. This program is designed for officials elected to serve within Kashmir’s state government, political parties, and cultural organizations.
International Visitor Leadership (IVLP) Program
Each year, over 250 professionals from around the world visit Northeast Ohio through IVLP. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, these visitors have been identified by U.S. embassies as emerging leaders in their fields. Over 50 Nobel Laureates and 335 current or former Chiefs of State or Heads of Government are alumni of this program.
By connecting with foreign leaders we strengthen Northeast Ohio’s commercial, cultural, and educational ties with the rest of the world.
