Economic and Business Reporting Skills for Journalists
February 6, 2016 - February 10, 2016
While India’s vibrant media remained the freest in South Asia in 2014, press freedom in the country was threatened by several factors, including a series of legal actions against journalists and editorial interference by media owners in the run-up to the May national elections. Continued violence against journalists, attempts at surveillance, and blocking of news channels, among other forms of censorship, were also issues of concern. This program aims to demonstrate how the cultivation of a media culture that advocates for a free and open press can directly impact public awareness and NGO advocacy on finance, business, economics, and public policy.
While in Cleveland, five representatives from major Indian media outlets will have the opportunity to meet with staff from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University’s Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development in order to gain sufficient context of the economic challenges faced by the Cleveland Community. Through an introduction to Cuyahoga Community College’s Journalism and Mass communications Program and a conversation with Ms. Jill Miller Zimon, founder of OpenNEO, participants will be able to observe how empowerment of aspiring journalists and the promotion of free data sharing have enabled Cleveland to effectively combat economic and political challenges.
