Civil Society and Rights Activism in China

China is undergoing radical social, economic and legal change on a daily basis. Three of its leading activists will discuss the current human rights situation in China, based on their collective decades of experience. Lu Jun, Yu Fangqiang and Zhou Dan will explore the spaces available for activism in contemporary China, and offer their predictions for the future developments of civil society in the Xi Jinping era.

This event is presented in partnership with Case Western Reserve University School of Law and National Committee on United States-China Relations. LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland is a community partner.  

The three panelists are China’s leading reform advocates:

Lu Jun

Mr. LU Jun is founder and Chief Coordinator of the Beijing Yirenping Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting social justice. He is best known in China for his pioneering advocacy on behlaf of Hepatitis-B carriers, for which he has won international recognition. His organization currently works on a variety of anti-discrimination and public health issues.

 

 

 

XieMs. Bin Xie is an Executive Director of Zhenzhou Yirenping, a disability rights advocacy organization. She is a Chinese human rights defender who has been working with grassroots NGOs for 8 years.

 

 

 

 

Zhou Dan

Mr. Zhou Dan is an openly gay public interest lawyer and a trailblazing voice for the rights of LGBT people in China. He launched the Shanghai Hotline for Sexual Minorities and continues to give free legal advice in China on a near-daily basis. He has also been a leader in HIV/AIDS rights advocacy.
