YP Special Event: Germany's New Direction - A Historic Federal Election
Mark Cassell Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Kent State University
Thursday, September 10th, 2009
6:30 pm
This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is also a moment when the political architecture that framed a stable, democratic, and economically successful regime is showing signs of stress. Domestic and international pressures are forcing Germans to reconsider post-war polices such as a tight monetary policy. The social market economy appears to be weakening under the weight of demographic and economic changes, and a political party system centered around "catch-all" parties appears to be no longer relevant as clientele politics and political cynicism grow in popularity. Mark Cassell, Ph.D., is associate professor at Kent State University, and specializes in economics and Germany. His insights into the changing political landscape in Germany will provide better understanding of the upcoming federal elections scheduled for September 27, 2009.

Every year, a book called "Great Decisions" is published with several chapters in it, each focusing on a different international topic. To participate in the discussion, all you need to do is read the chapter beforehand. Books can be purchased directly from the Foreign Policy Association, please click here. Reservations are required for this event. Spaces fill up quickly so act now!
What is different about Great Decisions?
Unlike other YP programs, reservations are required and seating is limited to 20 people!
You will have to do some "homework" and read the chapter (approximately 10 pages) before the discussion.
You can either borrow a book from CCWA or purchase your own. If you would like to borrow a CCWA book, all you have to do is come to our office and pick it up. You will have to return it to CCWA staff at the end of the discussion.
There will be a moderator at the discussion who is knowledgeable about the topic.
The discussions take place at a local, ethnic restaurant.
