Model United Nations Update

Lorain– Fall Conference – November 16 & 17, 2009

The Lorain Model UN conference was held at Lorain County Community College in the Spitzer Conference Center in Elyria, Ohio, last November.  Excellent facilities and a welcoming LCC staff made this a great conference.

The theme for the conference was “Reevaluation & Collective Reconstruction as a Global Community,” and this theme generated lively debate and discussion for the two day conference in November.

Eight schools and 188 students attended the conference;  students came Lorain County as well as other schools throughout the Cleveland area.  Both high school and college students from a variety of schools served as chairs and observers for the UN committees which were simulated.

Our keynote speaker was Professor Young Woon Ko, Assistant Professor of Religious studies at Lorain Collunity College.   Dr. Ko, originally from Seoul, South Korea, has studied both in Korea and in the United States, concentrating on comparative religion.  The title of his talk was “To Replace Fear with Experience and Insight.”

Students found the conference both productive and engaging as they debated such topics as Illegal Immigration, Free Trade between the United States and Cuba, and Disease Control.
