Model United Nations Update
Lorain - Fall Conference – November 18 & 19, 2010
The Lorain Model UN conference was held at Lorain County Community College in the Spitzer Conference Center in Elyria, Ohio.. Excellent facilities and a welcoming LCC staff made this a enjoyable and rewarding conference.
The theme for the conference was “Challenges for a New Generation,” and this theme generated lively debate and discussion for the two day conference. Committees simulated included among others the UN Children’s Fund, the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, and the UN Environment Program.
Eight schools and approximately 170 students attended the conference; students came from Lorain County as well as other schools throughout the Cleveland area. Both high school and college students from a variety of schools served as chairs and observers for the UN committees.
Our keynote speaker was Dr. Sunil Ahuja, Dean of Social Sciences and Human Services at Lorain County Community College. Born and raised in India, Dr. Ahuja has spent time in Africa, traveled in Europe, and lived and taught in the United States for several decades. Dr. Ahuja has published eight books on American political institutions, public policy, and elections. He spoke on the topic of “Preparing Generations Y and I for Life in the Flat World.”

Students found the conference both productive and engaging as they debated such topics as “Failing Nations and Global Financial Crisis,” “The Use of Genetically Modified Food,” and Nonproliferation and Nuclear Technology, ” topics currently or recently under debate in the United Nations.
