Bill Abrams
First Steps Out of Poverty: The Trickle Up Approach

The Nobel Prize awarded to Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank, turned the international spotlight on microlending, yet many people don’t know that fighting poverty with microfinance is an idea that’s been around for quite awhile. Trickle Up is one of the oldest microenterprise development organizations in the U.S. Founded in 1979, Trickle Up enables the poor, mostly women, to lift themselves out of poverty and make better lives for their families. The organization’s unique approach provides microgrants, not loans, to the very poor — people living on less than $1 a day who are unable to benefit from microcredit. President Bill Abrams will talk about how the organization starts or expands more than 10,000 businesses every year in eight countries around the world.
