Global Crossroads Lecture Series - Lecture Five
Barbara S. Harvey
Understanding Indonesia: Governance and Religious Diversity
This lecture is made possible in part by the Bickford Endowment Fund.
Indonesia is made up of over 17,000 islands, some 300 ethnic groups, and is home to more than 200 million people. Most are Muslim, making Indonesia the most populous Muslim majority nation in the world. Once known for its religious harmony, touristic beauty and rich culture, Indonesia has faced new challenges recently. Geographical disaster has affected tourism and militant extremism and violence have threatened religious harmony. Harvey was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta from 1993 to 1997 and served at the U.S. Consulate in East Java. She is an expert on Indonesian domestic political and social developments, internal rebellions and religion. Harvey will discuss these topics in the context of the 2009 Indonesian parliamentary and presidential elections.
