Global Crossroads Lecture Series - Lecture Four
Henrique Salas-Romer
Hugo Chavez: A Daring Pawn in the New Cold War
This lecture is made possible in part by the Truehaft Endowment Fund.
Venezuelan Hugo Chavez has courted controversy for much of his presidency, and relations between the U.S. and Venezuela have been deteriorating steadily since Chavez was elected in December 1998. The South American nation of 25 million holds special interest for the U.S. as Venezuela is America's third-largest source of imported oil. Chavez has flaunted this position since his election, irritating many Americans. Now is your chance to meet the man who irritates Chavez. Former Governor of the Venezuelan state of Carabobo, Yale-educated businessman Henrique Salas-Romer, ran for presidency of Venezuela in 1998 as the candidate of Project Venezuela, coming in second to Chavez with 40% of the votes. Salas-Romer has been an active force in strengthening the opposition to Chavez ever since. Salas-Romer’s up to the minute insights into the complicated circumstances shaping the current political situation in Venezuela promise to be fascinating.
