Global Crossroads Lecture Series - Lecture Three
Majka Burhardt
Vertical Ethiopia: Climbing Toward Possibility in the Horn of Africa
This lecture is made possible in part by the Norweb Endowment Fund.
Writer, climber, and guide Majka Burhardt takes you on a journey to Northern Ethiopia where she climbed desert sandstone towers up to 180 meters high in an effort to get to know this continuously evolving country. What began as adventure turned into advocacy for Burhardt as she discovered another side of Ethiopia — one that goes beyond its international reputation largely limited to drought, famine and political strife. Burhardt speaks to the beauty of the country’s people and its vast landscapes. Her compelling story and experiences examine the intersections between adventure and history, revealing what it means to climb and to explore the world.
