Transatlantic Agenda - Dr. Klaus Scharioth, German Ambassador to the United States

Dr. Klaus Scharioth, who became German Ambassador to the United States in March 2006, is recognized as a “diplomat’s diplomat,” committed to European integration and close transatlantic relations, especially with the United States.
He was born in 1947 in Essen, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. He earned his law degree in Germany and his Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He also has studied in Caldwell, Idaho, and at the Harvard Law School and John F. Kennedy School of Government.
During his 33 years in the German Foreign Service, he has served on the Asia desk, in Quito, Ecuador, at the United Nations, and as Chef de Cabinet (director of the private office) to the NATO Secretaries General Worner, Claes and Solana in Brussels. In Germany he served as head of the German Foreign Minister’s staff and the North America and Security Policy Directorate. His work has involved crisis management, arms control and disarmament, including negotiations with Iran, Russia, and the G8.
Just prior to becoming German Ambassador to the United States, he served as State Secretary, the highest civil service post in the German Foreign Offce.
