Cleveland I – Fall Conference – November 10 & 11, 2010

The Cleveland Fall conference was again held at the Church of the Covenant at University Circle, our second year at this site.   The church just celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of its dedication and is a premier example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture.  The warmth and beauty of this building and its staff make it a really welcoming and appropriate place for Model United Nations students and their activities.

The theme for the conference was “Challenges for a New Generation,” and this theme generated lively debate and discussion for the two day conference in November.  Among others, committees which were simulated included the Security Council, the Economic and Financial Council, and the UN Development Fund for Women.

Thirteen schools and 290 students attended the conference;  students came from Cleveland as well as both Eastern and Western suburbs.  We were pleased to have chairs, assistant chairs and observers from both Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College.

Our keynote speaker was Nozar Alaolmolki, who spoke on “Afghanistan: Past, Present and Future Dilemma.”  Dr. Alaolmolki is a scholar in residence at Hiram College and has spent time in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan as a Fulbright teaching scholar and is currently a member of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago.

Debate topics included such issues as “Failing Nations and Global Financial Crisis,”  “Good Governance”, and “Global Warming and International Regulation,” subjects which are currently under debate at the United Nations.
